SeaDream is expanding its horizons with its first new ship

SeaDream is expanding its horizons with its first new ship

SeaDream Yacht Club has been a quiet small-ship line since its founding in 2001, building a loyal following for its Caribbean and Europe cruises on two ships that were built in the 1980s.

So it certainly made a splash earlier this month with the announcement of its first new ship, the SeaDream III, scheduled to set sail in July 2029 from Hong Kong.

With room for 230 guests, the ship will double the capacity of the 112-passenger SeaDream I and II. It will also take SeaDream guests where they have rarely cruised before: In its 25 year-history, SeaDream has sailed in Asia just once, according to owner and co-founder Atle Brynestad.

Introducing a new build has been a goal for more than 10 years, and after plans for an expedition ship fell through in 2019 and the Covid pandemic came and went, it was finally the right time, said Brynestad.

Depending on the sailing, 70% to 90% of SeaDream guests are return customers, and they have expressed interest in cruising more of the world and doing it with the line, Brynestad said. Sailing the globe, visiting more destinations, was a task best suited for a larger ship, he said. Plus, he didn't want to swap out SeaDream's popular Caribbean and Europe cruises for other destinations.

The SeaDream I and II, he added, are here to stay.

"The existing ships are beautiful ships," he said. "They are small, intimate, and they can never be made like that again. So they are unique, and they will always be unique."

The SeaDream III will be built by China Merchants Cruise Shipbuilding. Larry Pimentel, who was SeaDream's first CEO and is now retired from the cruise industry, posited that the decision to look beyond Europe could be because shipyards there are at capacity into the 2030s. Looking elsewhere is the only way for a small luxury cruise line to invest in a newbuild without waiting close to a decade, he said.

The growing yacht market

SeaDream launched 25 years ago with two ships purchased from Seabourn; they were originally built in 1984 and 1985 for Sea Goddess Cruises.

The ships underwent refurbishments in advance of the cruise line's launch in 2001 as well as during the pandemic. They have gone into drydock for updates and maintenance every two years, Brynestad said.

Since its infancy, SeaDream has defined its onboard experience as one that is more like a yacht than a cruise ship. That concept is having a renaissance with the launch of Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, Four Seasons Yachts and Aman at Sea this decade.

The space is growing so significantly that luxury travel agency Global Travel Collection created a yacht category to track sales. The burgeoning market is good for SeaDream, Brynestad said, because it builds awareness about small-ship cruising.

"Business is booming," he said. "That's definitely not hurting us at all."

A third SeaDream ship will also grow brand awareness and offer travel advisors something fresh to sell, Brynestad said.

As the small-ship market grows, SeaDream should continue to dig into what it does best: selling "a specific experience that a devoted repeat guest base genuinely loves," said Pimentel.

"This newbuild is a bid for another generation of relevance and for a ship that can go where the current yachts can't," he said. "Done well, it extends the brand's life by 20 years."

In a letter to guests, Brynestad said the SeaDream III will have the same DNA as the fleet's current ships. To him, the brand is defined by a relaxed atmosphere with no need for restaurant reservations but high-quality personalised service.

He said he wants to move away from calling SeaDream "luxury."

"The word really has no meaning anymore for us," he said. "For SeaDream, it is much more about being a lifestyle company. We do not need to have the world's largest suites or the largest grand staircase. We do not need to be the biggest in anything. What we want for our guests is to be the best at something far more important: creating fantastic days and unforgettable experiences."

Royal Caribbean 2026 Q2 Results Strong; Company Raises Full Year Guidance

Royal Caribbean 2026 Q2 Results Strong; Company Raises Full Year Guidance

Royal Caribbean Group (NYSE: RCL) today reported second quarter Earnings per Share (“EPS”) of $4.20 and Adjusted EPS of $4.21.

These results were better than the company’s guidance, driven by strong close-in demand, lower costs, and favorable performance from joint ventures, the company said in a press release.

The company now expects full year Adjusted EPS to be in the range of $17.73 to $17.87.

The increase in earnings expectations reflects the stronger-than-expected second quarter performance and an improved outlook for the remainder of the year. This outlook incorporates a modest booking impact for select itineraries primarily due to prolonged geopolitical activity.

“The strong second quarter performance demonstrates the continued strength of our brands, the appeal of our vacation experiences, and the momentum in our business,” said Jason Liberty, Chairman and CEO, Royal Caribbean Group. “We expect another year of approximately double-digit growth in revenue and earnings, driven by consumers’ preference for our leading brands and supported by our strong booked position, leading margin profile, and fortified balance sheet.”

“We continue to expand, elevate and differentiate our portfolio of vacation experiences,” Liberty added. “Legend of the Seas, which launched earlier this month as the third ship in our Icon class, is part of a platform that is reshaping the cruising experience and delivering exceptional returns. Its successful debut represents another important milestone in the execution of our innovation pipeline as we continue to redefine the vacation experience. At the same time, we are deepening guest engagement through our loyalty and technology platforms – strengthening our relationships with guests, increasing repeat rates, and positioning us to capture a greater share of the growing $2 trillion global vacation market.”

Second Quarter 2026:
• Total revenue was $4.8 billion, a 6% increase year over year. Load factor in the second quarter was 110%.
• Gross Margin Yields decreased 5.6% as-reported. Net Yields increased 1.9% as-reported and 1.2% in Constant Currency.
• Gross Cruise Costs per Available Passenger Cruise Days (“APCD”) increased 4.5% as-reported. Net Cruise Costs (“NCC”), excluding Fuel, per APCD increased 4.4% as-reported and 3.9% in Constant Currency.
• Net Income was $1.1 billion or $4.20 per share, Adjusted Net Income was $1.1 billion or $4.21 per share, and Adjusted EBITDA was $1.8 billion.

Full Year 2026 Outlook:
• Revenue is expected to grow 9% year over year. Net Yields are expected to increase 2.35% to 2.85% as-reported and 1.75% to 2.25% in Constant Currency.
• NCC, excluding Fuel, per APCD are expected to increase approximately 0.4% as-reported and be approximately flat in Constant Currency.
• Adjusted EPS is expected to be in the range of $17.73 to $17.87, representing 14% year over year growth, and a 23% CAGR over the first two years of the company’s Perfecta program, which targets a 20% earnings CAGR from 2024 to 2027 and ROIC in the high teens by 2027.

Second Quarter 2026 Results

Net Income for the second quarter of 2026 was $1.1 billion or $4.20 per share compared to Net Income of $1.2 billion or $4.41 per share for the same period in the prior year. Adjusted Net Income was $1.1 billion or $4.21 per share for the second quarter of 2026 compared to Adjusted Net Income of $1.2 billion or $4.38 per share for the same period in the prior year. The company also reported total revenues of $4.8 billion and Adjusted EBITDA of $1.8 billion.

Capacity for the second quarter was up 5% year over year and the company delivered memorable vacations to 2.4 million guests, a 6% increase year over year. Total revenue increased 6% year over year. Gross Margin Yields decreased 5.6% as-reported, and Net Yields increased 1.9% as-reported (1.2% in Constant Currency), when compared to the second quarter of 2025. Load factor for the quarter was 110%. Net Yield growth exceeded the company’s guidance primarily driven by better than expected close-in demand.

Gross Cruise Costs per APCD increased 4.5% as-reported, compared to the second quarter of 2025. NCC, excluding Fuel, per APCD increased 4.4% as-reported (and 3.9% in Constant Currency), when compared to the second quarter of 2025. The better-than-expected cost performance in the second quarter was primarily driven by favorable timing of expenses.

Update on Bookings and Onboard Revenue

The overall demand environment remains strong, supported by consumers’ continued preference for the company’s differentiated experiences. Since the last earnings call, the company has experienced a modest, near-term impact on bookings for select itineraries, primarily due to prolonged geopolitical activity. The company remains booked at record prices, booking volumes are above last year’s levels, and load factors remain robust across its vacation portfolio. The company continues to benefit from strong guest engagement and demand for onboard and destination experiences, supported by ongoing enhancements to its product offerings and more targeted pre-cruise engagement.

“Consumer demand for our vacation experiences is strong, and guests continue to demonstrate a desire to spend on memorable experiences with us,” said Naftali Holtz, Chief Financial Officer, Royal Caribbean Group. “As we build a broader vacation platform, we are giving guests more reasons to vacation with Royal Caribbean across more occasions, while reinforcing our ability to drive higher engagement and spend over time. While still very early, booking trends for 2027 are encouraging and pacing ahead of historical levels, including for itineraries where demand was impacted by geopolitical developments this year.”

Third Quarter 2026

Net Yields are expected to be approximately flat as-reported and in Constant Currency as compared to 2025, reflecting continued healthy demand and pricing at record levels leading to expected total revenue growth of 8%.

NCC, excluding Fuel, per APCD, is expected to decrease 1.7% to 1.2% as-reported and 1.6% to 1.1% in Constant Currency as compared to 2025.
Based on current fuel pricing, interest rates, currency exchange rates and the factors detailed above, the company expects third quarter Adjusted EPS to be in the range of $6.26 to $6.36.

Aurora Expeditions’ Biggest Year Yet: New Ship, New Markets

Aurora Expeditions’ Biggest Year Yet: New Ship, New Markets

Aurora Expeditions closed out 2025 as its biggest year ever and is building on that momentum as the company recently expanded to three ships with the new Douglas Mawson, according to an interview with Chief Marketing Officer Katie Malone featured in the 2026 Expedition Report by Cruise Industry News.

There is also a charter deal with Lindblad for Alaska and a Mediterranean deployment that puts the newest vessel somewhere most polar operators don’t go.

Aurora operates the Greg Mortimer, the Sylvia Earle, and the Douglas Mawson. All three ships are part of the SunStone Infinity-class series on long-term charter deals.

The Douglas Mawson maxes out at 130 passengers for expedition cruises; however, the ship can accommodate more guests on small-ship cruises in the Mediterranean and British Isles.

The Mediterranean deployment kicks off this year with itineraries focused on storytelling.

Each sailing features a “Master Storyteller” with historians, genealogists, art experts or cultural specialists, alongside Aurora’s expedition team. Guests also receive all-inclusive “Your Choice” excursions at each port.

It’s a test of whether Aurora’s expedition DNA translates to warm-water cruising.

The company bills it as “Vantage Explorations,” distinct from traditional expedition cruising but using the same ships and operational philosophy. Aurora acquired some assets from bankrupt Vantage in 2024.

Meanwhile, the company made headlines in December 2025 when Lindblad Expeditions announced it would charter the Greg Mortimer for Alaska cruises starting in 2027.

The deal will run for three years and covers the Northern Hemisphere summer season.

That’s one-third of Aurora’s fleet capacity gone for six months a year, but Malone said not to worry.

“The Greg Mortimer will be chartered for six months during the Northern Hemisphere summer in 2027 and 2028, with an option for 2029,” Malone said. “This forms part of our long-term fleet and growth strategy, designed to optimize seasonal deployment and align all our capacity with the demand that is out there.”

With the Greg Mortimer in Alaska with Lindblad, Aurora will operate Europe, Arctic and expedition programs using the Sylvia Earle and Douglas Mawson.

The Greg Mortimer continues operating in Antarctica and other geographies outside the charter window.

The Lindblad deal solves a deployment problem, too, as it maximizes utilization without Aurora needing to build its own Alaska sales infrastructure.

MSC, Meyer Werft Expect to Seal 4+2 Ship Deal in Coming Weeks

MSC, Meyer Werft Expect to Seal 4+2 Ship Deal in Coming Weeks

MSC Cruises and Meyer Werft have issued a joint statement on the status of talks concerning the construction of four next-generation cruise vessels and two additional options.

The deal introducing a new class of vessels, called the “New Frontier,” was announced at the end of last year.

The contract would ensure the shipyard’s capacity well into the next decade.

“In December 2025, Meyer Werft and MSC Cruises announced a letter of intent for the construction of four innovative cruise ships, plus two options, at Meyer Werft. In the meantime, concrete planning for the ships’ design and negotiations for the conclusion of the relevant contracts have reached an advanced stage,” the statement reads.

“This involves an extensive and complex set of contracts, for which at least six months is typically required. Meyer Werft and MSC Cruises are confident that they will successfully conclude the negotiations in the coming weeks. The partners will then inform the public accordingly.”

With a maximum passenger capacity of 5,400 at 180,000 tons, the vessels are due to be delivered annually starting in 2030.

Viking Names Vesta in Croatia

Viking Names Vesta in Croatia

Viking named its newest ocean ship, the Viking Vesta, with a traditional ceremony in Split, Croatia, over the weekend. The vessel was recently delivered from Fincantieri to Viking.

Serving as ceremonial godmother of the Viking Vesta was the Norwegian journalist Lene Tangevald-Jensen, according to a press release.

The Viking Vesta will now continue her inaugural season sailing in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.

“As we celebrate 10 years of ocean voyages in 2025, we are pleased to welcome the new Viking Vesta to our award-winning fleet of elegant sister ships,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman and CEO of Viking.

“We are also very grateful to Lene for serving as godmother. In addition to her personal and professional accomplishments, Lene embodies the values that are very important to me and to Viking—she is kind, honest, hardworking and, of course, curious. I am proud to count her as a friend and a valued member of the extended Viking family.”

In keeping with the naming tradition, during the ceremony, Lene used a Viking broad axe to cut a ribbon that allowed a bottle of Norwegian aquavit to break on the ship’s hull.

Currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, the next Viking Cruises ocean vessel will be named Viking Vela.

Eleventh in a series of vessels that was started with the Viking Star in 2015, the Viking Vela will be ten meters longer, as well as two meters wider than its sister ships.

With the extra space, the new build will also carry more passengers: 998 versus 930.

The Viking Cruises website has already published the deployment of the ship as well.

After entering service in 2024, the Viking Vela is scheduled to spend its inaugural season in Northern Europe, offering itineraries to Scandinavia, the British Isles, Iceland, the Norwegian Fjords and more.

Carnival Corporation to Trim Down Cruise Newbuilding Pace

to Trim Down Cruise Newbuilding Pace

Carnival Corporation will decelerate its new building pace in an effort to not only moderate supply growth, but keep spending down, according to Josh Weinstein, president and CEO, speaking on the company’s year-end and fourth-quarter earnings call.

Weinstein said that the company didn’t expect to take delivery of any new ships in 2026, and beyond that, would only build two ships a year going forward.

“Going forward, we are committed to using our expected cash flow strength to repair the balance sheet over time, and we’ll be disciplined and rigorous in making newbuild decisions accordingly,” he said.

“We have just four ships on order through 2025, plus our second incredible Seabourn luxury expedition ship to be delivered in 2023.

“This is our lowest order book in decades,” Weinstein continued. “We don’t expect any new ships in 2026 and anticipate just one or two new builds each year for several years thereafter.”

Left on the Carnival orderbook through 2025 are the Carnival Jubilee, Cunard’s Queen Anne, the Sun Princess, another Princess newbuild that has yet to be named and the Seabourn Pursuit.

No new builds are on order for the company’s other brands including Holland America Line, AIDA Cruises, P&O Cruises and P&O Cruises Australia. Carnival’s joint venture with China State Shipbuilding Corporation was not mentioned.

With more old ships exiting combined with recent deliveries and the upcoming new build schedule, the company expects about 25 per cent of its capacity to be what it considers new ships in 2023.

That means an eight-percentage point increase in balcony cabins across the fleet, and differentiated onboard experiences resulting in greater onboard revenue.

While two 135,000-ton Vista-class new ships are slated for Adora Cruises, this 80,000-ton ship could also join the brand should construction commence.

According to a statement, the ship is 293.5 meters long and features a high proportion of balcony cabins with approximately 70 per cent of accommodations featuring a balcony.

Next, CSSC will complete the basic design of the ship and submit plans to the China Classification Society for final approval.

Following a two-day process that will set Viking Neptune afloat, it will then be moved to a nearby outfitting dock for final construction and interior build-out.

Norwegian Cruise Line Introduces New Norwegian Viva; Sailing Summer 2023

Norwegian Cruise Line today unveiled Norwegian Viva, the next ship in its new Prima Class set to sail in 2023.

The Norwegian Viva will be delivered from Fincantieri and will begin sailing Mediterranean itineraries in June 2023, homeporting in key Southern European port cities including Lisbon, Portugal; Venice (Trieste) and Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy; and Athens (Piraeus), Greece.

She will then sail the Southern Caribbean for her 2023-2024 winter season offering cruises from San Juan.

Harry Sommer, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line, said: "Norwegian Viva sets the standard in the premium segment, illustrating our commitment to pushing boundaries in four main areas: wide open space, service that puts guests first, thoughtful design and experiences beyond expectation. We have taken everything our guests love to the next level with this brand-new class of ships designed with them in mind."

Norwegian Viva will have hull art designed by Italian graffiti and sculpture artist Manuel Di Rita, commonly known as "Peeta," who also illustrated the hull design on Norwegian Prima.

"Norwegian Viva, the second of six Prima Class vessels being built with us, reinforces the great collaboration between Norwegian Cruise Line and Fincantieri," said Luigi Matarazzo, General Manager Merchant Ships Division at Fincantieri. "We were extremely satisfied that Norwegian Prima, the first of the new class, earned record-breaking bookings and we are excited to see how Norwegian Viva will live up to her sister ship. As we proved our resilience during these challenging times, this announcement represents another testament to Fincantieri´s global leadership role in the cruise sector."

The ship will be 965 feet long, 142,500 tons and accommodate 3,219 guests, according to a press release.

"The vessel will not only offer the highest staffing levels and space ratio of any new cruise ship in the contemporary and premium cruise categories and the largest variety of suite categories available at sea but will also boast a redefined The Haven by Norwegian, NCL’s ultra-premium keycard only access ship-within-a-ship concept," the company said. "The Haven’s public areas and 107 suites designed by Piero Lissoni, one of Italy’s most renowned designers, will feature an expansive sundeck, a stunning infinity pool overlooking the ship's wake and an outdoor spa with a glass-walled sauna and cold room."
