MSC Cruises Introduces Summer 2024 ‘Stay & Cruise’ Program

MSC Cruises announced its new summer 2024 “Stay & Cruise” program, offering guests the chance to extend their seven-night sailing into a nine or 10-night voyage, according to a statement.

The add-on packages are available for sailings on 11 MSC ships at five destinations; Athens, Venice, Rome, Miami and New York.

Travellers can add two nights’ accommodation with breakfast before or after their seven-night voyage at a 4-star hotel in Athens, Venice and Rome or a 3-star hotel in Miami, plus the option for two or three nights at a 4-star hotel in New York.

All “Stay & Cruise” packages offer a half-day excursion to explore the city’s attractions.

Ground transfers from airports to hotels are included for guests staying before the cruise and from the hotel to the ship.  Additionally, for guests staying after the cruise, transfers from the ship to the hotel and from the hotel to the airport are also included.

The offer applies to the MSC Divina, MSC Fantasia, MSC Musica, MSC Seaside and MSC Seaview from Civitavecchia for an extended stay in Rome before or after a cruise.

The add-on package to explore Venice is available pre- or post-cruise onboard the MSC Armonia, MSC Lirica and MSC Sinfonia from Marghera-Venice. Additionally, guests sailing on the MSC Opera, departing from the port of Piraeus, can extend their vacation in Athens.

The program is available for Caribbean itineraries on the MSC Seascape departing from Miami with an additional two-day stay in the city.

Guests sailing onboard the MSC Meraviglia can also extend their trip pre-cruise in New York before the ship sets sail.

An add-on package for Istanbul will also be available soon for MSC Cruises’ winter 2024-25 ‘Stay & Cruise’ program.

The Port of Piraeus has welcomed its first cruise ship call of the new year with the arrival of the Costa Deliziosa on Tuesday, January 2, according to a press release.

Celestyal Acquires AIDAaura; To Sail as Celestyal Discovery

Celestyal Acquires AIDAaura; To Sail as Celestyal Discovery

Celestyal has confirmed the acquisition of a second new vessel this year as the Celestyal Discovery follows the recent arrival of the Celestyal Journey, signaling a fleet refresh and further commitment to significant investment into the customer proposition, the company said.

The Celestyal Discovery will now join the Celestyal Journey in Athens, where they will both undergo multimillion-euro winter refurbishment programs ahead of the new season, which starts in 2024.

The Discovery takes over the Olympia’s program starting next March. Cruises will go on sale in December.

Built in 2003 for the Carnival Corporation, the ship has been sailing for the AIDA Cruise brand throughout her career to date.

The company said that the Celestyal Discovery is a mid-sized vessel, allowing Celestyal to continue offering its signature unique blend of marquee destinations and more secluded gems that characterize the company’s itineraries. She offers 633 staterooms, 62 of which feature balconies, in total accommodating up to 1,266 guests.

“Given strong market and business conditions, we are thrilled to have expedited the renewal of our fleet to welcome the Celestyal Discovery into the Celestyal family,” said Chris Theophilides, CEO. “Celestyal Discovery joins the Celestyal Journey to undergo an extensive refurbishment program over the winter period, signifying further our intent to keep delighting our customers. As a confident challenger brand, our team is excited to continue to make waves across the industry next season, with a refreshed fleet, brand, network, and a renewed sense of direction.”

North America Push

“The new Celestyal Discovery is a significant upgrade from the Olympia, in both guest-facing spaces and below deck,” said Brandon Townsley, vice president and managing director, North America. “It offers a variety of restaurant outlets, entertainment spaces, and we are very excited about the conference and meeting facilities it offers.”

The ship also has a better mix of premium accommodations and 62 balcony cabins, Townsley told Cruise Industry News, noting that per diems should be on the rise with the more modern ship.

The new Discovery joins the Celestyal Journey, which replaced the older Crystal earlier this year, marking a quick complete fleet transformation for the brand.

“It’s a testament to the efforts and initiatives to position the brand as a small, premium ship experience with upgraded hardware and an upgraded range of accommodations,” said Townsley.

The vessel had been scheduled to operate from Athens from mid-August

The vessel has been scheduled to operate from Athens from mid-August but will now not launch until the second quarter of 2023.

Virgin Voyages said the delay at the yard in Genoa “was not anticipated”, adding: “Resilient Lady will remain in Genoa getting onboard work completed, hitting the high seas next spring.”

It added: “Virgin Voyages did not land on this decision lightly, and despite making tremendous strides alongside the cruise industry as a whole, the brand is not immune to the global challenges the world is facing.

“This includes supply chain obstacles, a level of regional uncertainty for international travellers in countries in Eastern Europe, crewing challenges based on government regulations and restrictive Covid entry requirements back into the US.”

Passengers and agents are due to be informed of refunds and compensation advice in the next few days.

This includes a 200% Future Voyage Credit (FVC) or a full refund of the amount paid, plus 25% FVC.

Viking Expands Restart of Cruising with Two More Ships from Valletta

Viking Expands Restart of Cruising with Two More Ships from Valletta

Viking announced today that it will restart operations in the Mediterranean with new ocean voyages for vaccinated guests beginning this summer, according to a press release

The Viking Venus and Viking Sea will homeport in Valletta and sail two different 11-day roundtrip itineraries in the Mediterranean

Guests on the new Malta & Adriatic Jewels itinerary will overnight in Valletta and then sail to Montenegro and Croatia, calling in Kotor, Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar and Å ibenik, before returning to the Maltese archipelago, with a stop in Gozo and finally back to Valletta. Guests on the new Malta & Greek Isles Discovery itinerary will also overnight in Valletta and then sail to Greece, calling in Kalamata, Athens, Santorini, Rhodes and Souda Bay, before returning to Valletta.

The Viking Venus and Viking Sea will sail the itineraries between July and early October 2021.

“We thank the government of Malta for its support and enthusiasm as we continue restarting operations,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking. “Malta is a fantastic destination, with ancient history, rich culture and a central location in the Mediterranean. We began calling in Malta in 2016 and look forward to welcoming guests back to some of the most historically significant and naturally beautiful areas of the Med—in both the Maltese archipelago, as well as along the Croatian coast, and around Greek islands this summer.”

Today’s news follows Viking’s recent announcements of Welcome Back ocean voyages in England, Iceland and Bermuda, beginning in May 2021. The company is actively working on developing additional Welcome Back itineraries in a variety of other destinations, with the goal of announcing further 2021 sailings as soon as government approvals are given.

Also, citing the result of strong demand, Viking also announced today it is adding more sailing dates this summer for its Welcome Back voyages around Iceland and Bermuda.

Norwegian’s Three Cruise Brands Propose Plans to Resume Sailing From the U.S. by July

Norwegian’s Three Cruise Brands Propose Plans to Resume Sailing From the U.S. by July

Following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) updated Conditional Sail Order, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NCLH) has proposed its own plans to resume sailing from U.S. homeports on or about July 4, 2021, with full COVID-19 vaccinations required of all guests and crew.

This applies to the corporation’s three brands — Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises — and is consistent with the Biden administration’s targeted reopening of the country.

Norwegian agrees with the CDC “that vaccinations are the primary vehicle for Americans to get back to their everyday lives,” said Frank Del Rio, president and CEO of NCLH, in a press release. However, the company requests that the government agency no longer limits cruise travel, as mandatory vaccine requirements exceed safety measures in the Conditional Sail Order, thus eliminating the need for it.

“Our robust and comprehensive SailSAFE health and safety program extends well beyond the proto-cols of the travel, leisure and hospitality sectors, all of which have already reopened, including hotels and resorts, casinos, restaurants, sporting venues, theme parks and airlines,” Del Rio said. “With vaccine mandates and strict health and safety protocols in place, we believe we can provide a uniquely safe and healthy vacation experience.”

Del Rio has issued a letter to Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky, director of the CDC, requesting permission to sail accordingly, citing the Healthy Sail Panel, developed in conjunction with Royal Caribbean Group and led by Michael Leavitt, former Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, and Dr. Scott Gottlieb, former Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The proposal includes required vaccinations, as well as SailSAFE health and safety protocols such as COVID-19 testing, physical distancing, reduced capacity (60% to start and increasing by 20% every 30 days) and face coverings, for the time being. Vaccines will be required until at least October 31, 2021, when the company will reevaluate its requirements based on the latest science.

"We can create a safe, ‘bubble-like’ environment for guests and crew."

“These stringent requirements will remain in place until public health conditions allow for the im-plementation of more lenient protocols,” reads the letter to Walensky.

Until then, passengers must show proof of full FDA-, EMA- or WHO-approved COVID-19 inoculations no less than two weeks prior to embarkation. Since vaccines are not currently approved for children, kids will not be permitted to sail during this initial period.

“We can create a safe, ‘bubble-like’ environment for guests and crew,” said Del Rio. “We look forward to joining the rest of the travel, tourism and hospitality sectors in participating in this next phase of our recovery.”

While Norwegian’s plans include resumption from the U.S., it is preparing an upcoming restart outside the country, as well, scheduling NCL sailings in the Caribbean and Greek Isles. Norwegian Jade will embark in Athens (Piraeus), Greece, starting July 25; Norwegian Joy will sail from Montego Bay, Jamaica, beginning Aug. 7; and Norwegian Gem will depart from La Romana, Dominican Republic, starting Aug. 15.

“Over a year after we initially suspended sailings, the time has finally come when we can provide our loyal guests with the news of our great cruise comeback,” said Harry Sommer, president and CEO of NCL, in a press release. "We have been working diligently towards our resumption of operations, focusing on the guest experience with health and safety at the forefront.”

Currently, Piraeus can berth between nine and eleven cruise ships simultaneously, using a total of 2.8 kilometres of quay.’s expansion plans include adding four new 400-metre cruises berths, adding a total of 1.65 kilometres of quay length and boosting the port’s capacity by roughly 50%.

Carnival Cruise Line to return to Europe

Carnival Cruise Line to return to Europe

Carnival Cruise Line will make a return to Europe in 2016 when it launches new ship Carnival Vista.
The news comes after the line announced in May 2013 that it would have no ships sailing in Europe during 2014 and 2015, citing increasing airfares as the reason behind the decision.
New itineraries for summer 2016 on Carnival Vista include Athens, Barcelona, Dubrovnik, Izmir, Corfu, Livorno, Marseille, Messina (Sicily), Naples, Rome, Trieste and Valetta.
The ship will have its first European sailing on May 1 and will then have 18 sailings in Europe before moving on to New York in October. The ship's official homeport has yet to be revealed.
The ship will have the first IMAX cinema at sea, as well as new dining options, more alfresco dining and the biggest Waterworks of any Carnival ship. The ship will also have a new Havana pool at the back of the ship, with Havana cabana staterooms available to book.
Mark Tamis, senior vice president of guest operations, said: “I really feel and we do [at Carnival] that this is the greatest ship to date and certainly the best ship to come from Carnival Cruise Line.
“This is about building on past success. This is built of the success of Carnival Breeze and what is rolling out across the whole Carnival fleet.
“We set out to make this our most innovative ship to date. This is about creating connects and a connection to the sea. This ship, like no other ship, brings that all together.“
When the line announced it was pulling away from Europe in last year, the company said it didn’t believe Americans, who make up the vast majority of its passengers, would pay increased airfares to cross the Atlantic.
In May last year, agents were praised for switch-selling customers to book a Caribbean cruise with Carnival rather than a European one.
During a VIP agent trip on Carnival Breeze last year, Lynn Torrent, executive vice-president os sales and guest services, said the line’s bosses were watching the moves being made by other international brands. She said Carnival was sitting back and seeing what other lines were doing in the UK market before making a decision.

Athens – The secrets everyone misses first time around!

Athens – The secrets everyone misses first time around!

You might think that Athens doesn’t have many secrets left to discover – after all the entire city is pretty much one huge excavation site and history lesson! There are still plenty of hidden gems to tempt you off ship however, even if you’ve already done the Parthenon, the Temple of Poseidon, the Agora and the Acropolis a hundred times before!

Why not head for these secret spots to freshen up your Greek adventures when you feel like Athens is getting old…….

Philopappos Hill
This gem isn’t terribly well hidden – in fact it’s in plain sight of the Acropolis but whilst the tourist droves are kept busy there, this ancient tomb and monument is left pretty much alone – great if you want a snap of yourself being cultured in Athens without hundreds of other tourists photo-bombing!
History fans take note that this landmark is dedicated to a Syrian Prince with a very long name who was apparently generous in giving his riches to Athens (although he might have been more impressed with a prime spot on the Acropolis!).
In case anyone asks, that very long name is Gaius Julius Antiochus Epiphanes Philoppappos – and we thought Kate and Wills had overdone it with George Alexander Louis!

The Pnyx
If you’ve already done the Agora then ditch the tourists trying to work out which relic is which and take a look at the nearby Pnyx instead.
No, we’re not getting confused with Egyptian river cruises – The Pynx, not the Sphinx!
It’s a gathering spot dating back to the 5th century where platforms and an amphitheatre were used to deliver speeches.
What’s most mindboggling is imagining how the giant stones making up the platform were delivered without modern machinery – they’re bigger than the average man and probably heavier than the average car!

Kerameikos Cemetery
From the Pnyx, carry on beyond the packed-out Agora and seek out this deathly quiet spot in what’s always a busy city.
The tourists stay away (can’t imagine why!) making this Bronze Age cemetery a peaceful place for wannabe excavators to explore.

Exarchia
Once you’ve had enough of being quiet, head for the hip and anything but quiet side of town. Exarchia is full of cool bars and amazing graffiti.
Known as the heart of radical Athens and with a turbulent recent history including rioting and police raids, many stay away from Exarchia but if you’re visiting Athens during the daytime and want to see a different side of the city, Exarchia can be an exciting, eye-opening experience.
Full of cool cafes and bars, record shops and all sorts of people, it’s also a great lesson in the recent history of Athens, when you want to discover something more relevant than the dusty ancient monuments and relics can offer.
Just be sure to keep your wits about you and we wouldn’t advise visiting with children or after dark.

The Art Foundation
If Exarchia is a little bit too scary but you still want a taste of cool, arty Athens then The Art Foundation on Monastiraki is a so-hip-it-hurts hangout.
A hidden, graffitied doorway among the derelict houses on the market square opens up to an amazing but rundown three storey townhouse with central courtyard.
The courtyard houses a café and bar and the tiny rooms of the storeys each contain exhibits of modern art – there’s a fantastic surprise to discover in each one.
A bit like falling down the rabbit hole but an experience in Athens that you’ll never forget. Ssssssh, don’t tell the tourists.
jiCHYWA

Monastiraki Market
If you’re in Athens on a Sunday then Monastiraki Flea Market is a great place to pick up souvenirs that they definitely won’t have in the cruise ship mall.
The market square will be abuzz with people touting curios of all kinds and you’ll be surrounded by traditional Greek restaurants and cafes if you’ve got a hunger for something other than vintage postcards or old camping gear.
Kafeneio Ivis is a good spot for basic mezze and cheap eats, with tables outside or you can eat your kebab with a view of the Acropolis on the terrace at restaurant Savvas.
Xv0vZqv

Diomidis Botanical Gardens
Whether you’re wandering the ancient sites or exploring the markets and squares, Athens can feel dusty and dry.
Freshen up with an hour or so at this glorious garden right in the heart of the Haidari neighbourhood – even many Athenians don’t even know that it exists!
With over 2,500 types of plant, it can feel like all of the fauna from across the city has congregated in this one garden to make up the largest Botanical Garden in Greece.
Add to the gardens numerous lakes, a café and a kids’ playground and you’ve got a day in Athens that’s a natural antidote to the historical trail.

Cine Paris
Nestled in the middle of the historic and charming Plaka area, Cine Paris is a must if you get an evening in the city.
Here you can watch a movie on an outdoor big screen – but you may be tempted to watch the incredible views of the Acropolis instead!
Now, we love our cruise ships with outdoor cinemas but even we have to admit that Cine Paris has the edge when it comes to atmosphere.
This area is amazing for a wander and a bite to eat, day or night, and if you can catch a movie before you head back to ship it’ll make your Plaka experience that little bit more magical.

The Corinth Canal
If you haven’t had enough of water why not skip the city and hop on a mini-cruise within your cruise?
The Corinth Canal is an amazing day trip from Athens, with bright turquoise waters flanked by steep cliff faces which form a narrow (very narrow at times – breathe in!) canal.
You won’t get the QM2 down there but you can take a smaller ship.
If you’re feeling extremely brave you can also take a bungee jump from the bridge that straddles the canal – it’s a pretty steep step up from the onboard zip line, that’s for sure!

The Acropolis Rocks
At the Acropolis Rocks you can see the entire city of Athens without having to wear out a single iota of shoe leather.
The view from the flat limestone platform is breathtaking, and well worth getting off the ship for, even if the surrounding temples, relics and monuments really aren’t your thing.
For the ultimate Athens experience in just one hour, take a giros kebab up to the rocks and set out a picnic, for a Greek feast for all the senses.

C7smudx

Epidaurus Ancient Theatre
If you’ve got all day and want to see something outside of the city, this theatre is well worth the two hour trip from Athens.
All the better if your trip coincides with a performance, as the incredible acoustics of the ancient amphitheatre attract some huge shows and legendary performers – Hollywood great Kevin Spacey performed there in Richard III!

srq1jJa

The Psiri District
This area of the city is full of character and safe to wander both day and night.
The colourful houses, eclectic street art and narrow alleyways make up a lively labyrinth but what many visitors don’t know is that this now trendy, gentrified residential spot used to be the city’s red light district.
If you’re hungry, thirsty or just plain nosy then you have to pop in to the charming eatery Oineas.
The owner collects bottles, posters and anything retro, turning the space into a living museum – and the Greek food is among the best simple fayre you’ll find in the city.

Whether you want to explore areas of ancient Athens that the tourists don’t bother with or you want to experience the more modern side of this eclectic city, Athens has so much more to offer than its crumbling temples.
