TUI Cruises’ Ships Running on Renewable LNG

Two TUI Cruises ships are currently operating on bio-LNG, according to a statement shared on social media.

The company said that the Mein Schiff Relax and the Mein Schiff Flow are running entirely on renewable LNG during their summer seasons in Europe.

TUI noted that this greener fuel is based on biomethane, which can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels.

“Thanks to the use of bio-LNG alone, we were already able to save around 26,000 tons of CO2 by July 2026 and are expected to reach around 50,000 tons by the end of the year,” the company stated.

In addition to burning cleaner fuels, TUI highlighted other initiatives aimed at improving sustainability, including the use of shore power.

Various ships were retrofitted with connections over the past few years, including the Mein Schiff 1, the Mein Schiff 2 and the Mein Schiff 5.

Ships also use sustainable textiles and operate under the watch of dedicated environmental officers, who are said to work to keep operations as green as possible.

The company reduced the use of plastic onboard and shifted its shore excursions program to focus on environmentally friendly tours.

In 2024, TUI also launched the industry’s first methanol-ready cruise ship with the debut of the Mein Schiff 7.

The Mein Schiff Relax is currently offering itineraries departing from Germany to destinations in the Baltic and Scandinavia.

After debuting earlier this year, the Mein Schiff Flow is spending its maiden season in the Western Mediterranean with cruises to Spain, Italy, France, Morocco and Portugal.

Built by Fincantieri, the 4,000-passenger vessels introduced a new design to the fleet, becoming the company’s largest ships at 161,000 tons.

TUI is now working with Fincantieri on two additional LNG-powered vessels, which are scheduled to debut in 2031 and 2032.

 

Fincantieri Delivers Mein Schiff Flow in Monfalcone

Fincantieri and TUI Cruises celebrated the delivery of Mein Schiff Flow at the Monfalcone shipyard. The vessel is the second of two next-generation InTUItion-class cruise ships, designed for dual-fuel operation (liquefied natural gas and marine gas oil).

“With the delivery of Mein Schiff Flow, we celebrate a new milestone in our collaboration with TUI Cruises and reaffirm the strategic role of the Monfalcone shipyard as a center of excellence in global shipbuilding,” said Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and managing director of Fincantieri.

“Here, innovation, sustainability and industrial expertise are transformed every day into productive capacity and international competitiveness. This achievement demonstrates the strength of an ecosystem that continues to evolve, investing in the technologies of the future and enhancing Italy’s industrial know-how,” added Folgiero.

The delivery ceremony was attended by the Prefect of Gorizia, Ester Fedullo, the Mayor of Monfalcone, Luca Fasan, and the civil and military authorities of the region.

It was also attended by Folgiero, Wybcke Meier, CEO of TUI Cruises, Biagio Mazzotta, chairman of Fincantieri, Luigi Matarazzo, general manager of Fincantieri’s Merchant Ships Division and Cristiano Bazzara, director of the Monfalcone shipyard.

Fincantieri said in a press release that the delivery of Mein Schiff Flow strengthens its partnership with TUI Cruises.

The relationship was reinforced by the contract signed last September for the construction of two additional InTUItion-class vessels, sister ships to Mein Schiff Relax and Mein Schiff Flow, scheduled for delivery in 2031 and 2032, respectively.

The delivery also reinforces Monfalcone’s central role in the construction of next-generation cruise ships and its position as the group’s main shipyard.

Designed to operate on LNG propulsion, Mein Schiff Flow is equipped with catalytic converters compliant with Euro 6 standards, a steam turbine that uses the residual heat from the diesel generators, and an electrical shore power connection.

According to Fincantieri, the features will enable virtually emission-free operations while the vessel is berthed in port, accounting for approximately 40 percent of its operational time.

The ship also features a waste treatment system that transforms organic materials into recyclable components via a thermal process.

With the new Mein Schiff Flow to be introduced next year, following the sister ship, Mein Schiff Relax, this spring, and Mein Schiff 7 last year, the brand is on an aggressive growth path, more than doubling its guest capacity from 2023 to 2026.

With nine ships in service, Mein Schiff will have a 35.5 per cent share of the German-speaking cruise market as estimated by the 2025 Cruise Industry News Annual Report.

Mein Schiff is sailing into 2025 with a tailwind, according to the cruise line, noting strong demand from the German-speaking markets, Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and also increasingly from neighbouring European countries.

According to Wybcke Meier, CEO, the clear and differentiated position of the brand and the Mein Schiff fleet is in the premium segment of European cruises, thus seeking to appeal also to customers beyond the German market.

Clas Eckholt, Vice President of Commercial, said in a prepared statement that the focus is on offering an international cruise experience with a distinctly German touch.

At some 160,000 tons and with a double occupancy capacity of more than 4,000 guests, the new ship class is introducing a new era for the brand. The new ships are not only significantly larger than the rest of the fleet but are also fueled by LNG and are described as being future-compatible with low emissions bio- and e-LNG.

Also, introduced last year, the Mein Schiff 7 is said to be methanol-ready.

The rest of the ships are kept up to date with the latest project being the drydocking of the 2015-built Mein Schiff 4, which underwent a facelift earlier this year.

UK cruise ship operator moves into newbuilding for the first time as part of company’s refleeting

Fincantieri and TUI AG have signed a memorandum of agreement for the design and construction of two new cruise ships for the Marella Cruises brand. This agreement represents a major step for Marella Cruises, which is venturing into newbuilding for the first time and has chosen Fincantieri as its strategic partner for this transformation.

A statement said the ships would be designed specifically for the English market and have a focus on environmental sustainability. They will redefine premium cruising through refined design, high-quality materials and spacious accommodations.

The two vessels will be delivered in 2030 and 2032.

Fincantieri chief executive and managing director Pierroberto Folgiero commented, “We are proud to welcome Marella Cruises as a new customer and to support its vision as it enters the newbuild segment. The project will bring together our expertise in ship design, innovation and sustainability to deliver vessels that meet the evolving expectations of modern cruise passengers."

Fincantieri has built a solid and successful relationship with TUI Cruises, the joint venture between TUI AG and Royal Caribbean Cruises. In February, the Group delivered the cruise ship Mein Schiff Relax, the first of two InTUItion-class concept cruise ships which is dual-fuel powered, while the second unit, Mein Schiff Flow, is under construction at the Monfalcone shipyard, with delivery scheduled for 2026.
