Silver Nova Set to Debut in Asia-Pacific

Silver Nova Set to Debut in Asia-Pacific

Silversea’s newest ship, the Silver Nova, will debut in the Asia-Pacific region from late September 2024 to April 2025, according to a press release.

The first of Silversea’s new Nova Class ships will arrive in Kushiro, Japan, on September 27, marking the start of its inaugural season in Asia. After two voyages in the region, the Silver Nova will head to Australia and New Zealand in November for seven sailings, lasting 16 to 18 days each, before returning to Asia in February 2025.

“We are thrilled to finally be celebrating the arrival of the beautiful Silver Nova in Asia-Pacific,” said Bert Hernandez, president of Silversea. “Anticipation has been building among our valued guests and travel advisors in the region, and we’re delighted to be able to introduce them to one of the most pioneering ships in experiential luxury cruise travel at long last. Silver Nova will be the most luxurious ship sailing in Asia-Pacific until she leaves the region in April 2025, with her striking architectural innovations, advanced energy efficiency standards, and unprecedented range of suites and public venues.”

During the Silver Nova’s inaugural season in Asia-Pacific, Silversea will introduce its S.A.L.T. (Sea and Land Taste) culinary program in Australia and New Zealand, and offer S.A.L.T. shore excursions in Japan for the first time.

“We’re excited to be bringing S.A.L.T. (Sea and Land Taste) to Asia-Pacific in 2024, including Australia and New Zealand for the first time,” added Hernandez. “S.A.L.T. is all about discovering the soul of a place through its food and culture — and where better to taste and explore than these countries so rich in heritage and celebrated for their diverse cuisines? Some highlights will include learning about the building blocks of umami in Japan, every culinary traveller’s dream destination; exploring the lively markets and learning to make traditional and new Vietnamese dishes with the first chef to receive a Michelin Star in Ho Chi Minh City; great wineries and native ingredients in beautiful New Zealand; exploring metropolitan Melbourne with its vibrant dining scene, as well as the wilder shores of Tasmania where we’ll learn about foraging and experience live fire cooking with one of the region’s best young chefs. There are so many great food stories to tell in this part of the region, we can’t wait to share them with our guests.”

Highlighted experiences ashore include:

  • Osaka, Japan: Farm-to-table culinary experience with a fermentation workshop and eight-course lunch with sake pairings (October 2024 – April 2025).
  • Melbourne, Australia: Exploration of native ingredients with chef Nornie Bero, featuring a five-course lunch and damper-making workshop (November 2024 – February 2025).
  • Adelaide, Australia: Seasonal foraging tour in Adelaide Botanic Gardens with chef Tom Tilbury, followed by a four-course lunch with local wines (November 2024 – February 2025).
  • Hobart, Tasmania: Interactive cooking masterclass with chef Analiese Gregory, followed by lunch and local wine (December 2024 – February 2025).
  • Napier, New Zealand: Private winery tour at Craggy Range, wine tasting and a five-course lunch at the award-winning restaurant (December 2024 – January 2025).

Ovation of the Seas joins Royal Caribbean's fleet following delivery ceremony

Ovation of the Seas joins Royal Caribbean's fleet following delivery ceremony

Richard Fain and Bernard Meyer
There is a new Royal Caribbean ship officially in the fleet, as of today.
Royal Caribbean took delivery of its 24th cruise ship, Ovation of the Seas, in a ceremony held today in Bremerhaven, Germany.  Ovation of the Seas is the third Quantum-class ship in Royal Caribbean's fleet.
Royal Caribbean Chairman Richard Fain took delivery of Ovation of the Seas from Meyer Werft Yard’s Managing Partner Bernard Meyer at the official handover ceremony.
“Ovation of the Seas is magnificent,” said Richard. “Our thanks to the Meyer Werft team for their ongoing partnership in designing and building awe-inspiring ships with us.”

“It’s wonderful to welcome Ovation of the Seas to the Royal Caribbean family of ships,” said Michael Bayley, President and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. “We have once again introduced yet another one of the most technologically advanced cruise ships and the very first that has been built for the China market – a market we continue to demonstrate our commitment to expanding. Quantum Class has redefined the status quo, and we are excited for our guests in China and Australia to enjoy their extraordinary vacations onboard this stunner.”

Ovation of the Seas will now sail to Southampton, U.K., where the ship will offer a series of short getaways before she sets sail on her 52-night “Global Odyssey” culminating in the arrival to her homeport in Tianjin, China.

She will begin her first homeport sailing season in China from Tianjin in June 2016. Ovation, together with Quantum of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas, Voyager of the Seas and Legend of the Seas, will make up the largest fleet of any cruise line sailing in China.

Biggest, newest ships can thrive in Europe, Asia: Goldstein

Biggest, newest ships can thrive in Europe, Asia: Goldstein

Goldstein - 'In the Mediterranean, Europe and Asia-Pacific, the largest ships can be viable and thrive'Goldstein - 'In the Mediterranean, Europe and Asia-Pacific, the largest ships can be viable and thrive'
Oasis of the Seas turning around in Barcelona this month and Quantum of the Seas going to China next year show that Europe and Asia can handle cruising's biggest and newest hardware. As Adam Goldstein, president and coo of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., put it: 'In the Mediterranean, Europe and Asia-Pacific, the largest ships can be viable and thrive.'
When Oasis of the Seas made its inaugural call at Barcelona two weekends ago, it generated three times the media response of anything the company has ever done in the region, Goldstein said. Apart from the publicity, the operations were impressive—a 'great accomplishment' by the Port of Barcelona.
'It clearly shows Europe is capable right now of supporting the biggest ships in the world and the infrastructure exists to support Allure of the Seas for a full season next year,' Goldstein told Seatrade Med in Barcelona last week. 'We now have the opportunity to deploy our biggest and best new ships here. This bodes well for the Mediterranean.'
It's the culmination of a sequence of development. The current Oasis 'micro-season' paves the way for Allure's full season. Going step by step over time gives everyone the chance to acclimate.
'The infrastructure that exists to handle 6.4m passengers wasn't here 20 years ago,' Goldstein said. 'The fundamental capability to accommodate growth in the Mediterranean is available if there's adequate planning.'
From a source market perspective, Europe remains 'a mainstay of the business for us and the industry. We'd all like to see the macroeconomic situation in Europe be better than it is,' he added. However, the good news is that Spain is showing signs of recovery.
The market is growing, although at a slower rate. 'We're able to generate profitability here. It's really attractive to cruise in Europe. The business is doing well,' Goldstein told Seatrade Insider during an interview in Barcelona.
Last year cruises in Europe attracted nearly 1m non-Europeans, demonstrating resilience following the global recession.
And Asia is emerging as the third major cruise operating region of the world.
After the recent deal to sell Celebrity Century to China's Ctrip.com International, it's too early to tell how the relationship will develop. 'We're in discussions to see,' Goldstein said. 'They're already a producer for us. We hope to maintain and build the relationship.'
The fact that Quantum of the Seas will operate year-round from Shanghai is 'remarkable. It's an amazing development for the Royal Caribbean International brand and the company to so quickly have one of our newest ships operating in China.
'I don't think anybody foresaw something like this,' he said, adding that just 10 years ago, China was 'a gray spot on the map' for the cruise industry.
Next year Royal Caribbean will have four ships there, counting also Mariner of the Seas, Voyager of the Seas and Legend of the Seas.

CLIA: Capacity up in developing markets

CLIA: Capacity up in developing markets

By Tom Stieghorst

CLIA’s annual report on the economic contribution of the cruise industry highlights growth in less developed cruise territories, including Asia, the Australia/Pacific region and South America.

The report said these three areas recorded 20% capacity growth in 2013 and accounted for more than half the global increase in available bed days. Europe’s capacity growth slowed from 18% in 2011 to 3.5% last year.

CLIA said the number of passengers carried in 2013 by its member lines rose 3.9%, to 17.6 million (river cruises are not included in the tally).

Bed days increased 4.8% because the average cruise was longer and capacity was higher, CLIA said.

Passenger embarkations at U.S. ports fell 1.3%, to nearly 10 million, the first time in at least four years that happened. CLIA attributed the decline primarily to redeployments to markets more distant from the U.S.

Direct spending by cruise lines, passengers and crew in the U.S. crossed the $20 billion threshold, rising 2.4% to $20.1 billion in 2013. More than 80% of that was for wages, taxes, and goods and services. Passengers and crew accounted for $3.63 billion in spending.

CLIA member cruise lines in North America showed a net increase of one ship in 2013, to 178, with a combined capacity of 338,505 berths, the study said.

Celebrity Cruises to have its own Asia organization

Celebrity Cruises to have its own Asia organization

By Tom Stieghorst

Celebrity Cruises said it will have its own organization in Asia, separate from the current international structure.

Effective immediately, Kelvin Tan will serve as Celebrity's commercial director, Asia-Pacific.

Celebrity said Tan and his team will be based out of Singapore, and will oversee the brand's marketing, trade support and sales in the region.

Tan will continue to partner with current international representatives in the region, Celebrity said.

While Celebrity's ships have Asian itineraries, it is primarily marketed in North America.

“The Asia-Pacific region has great potential for Celebrity Cruises, and this will best position the brand for future growth in this dynamic region," Celebrity CEO Michael Bayley said in a statement.
