Celebrity Millennium Arrives in Puerto Rico for Homeporting Program


The Celebrity Millennium is starting a homeporting program in Puerto Rico today. Sailing roundtrip from San Juan, the Celebrity Cruises vessel is now set to offer a series of departures to the Southern and Eastern Caribbean.

Three different week-long itineraries in the region are part of the program, which extends through mid-April.

Departing today, the first one includes visits to five different islands: Tortola, St. Maarten, Roseau, Barbados and Grenada.

Focusing on popular destinations on the Southern Caribbean, a second itinerary includes visits to St. Kitts, Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao, as well as two days at sea.

Before returning to North America in late April, the Millennium also offers a third itinerary week-long in the region. Sailing roundtrip from San Juan too, the cruise features visits to St. Thomas, St. Kitts, St. Johns, Barbados and St. Lucia.

The local season ends with a repositioning voyage to Fort Lauderdale. Soon after, in May, the 91,000-ton vessel departs Port Everglades on a 15-night Panama Canal cruise to join the Celebrity Eclipse and the Celebrity Solstice in Alaska for a summer program.

First in a series of four ships known as the Millennium Class, the Celebrity Millennium originally entered service in 2000.

Now offering most of Celebrity’s signature experiences and spaces, the 1,950-guest vessel underwent an extensive renovation in 2019, as part of the Celebrity Revolution program.

In addition to a new livery, the Millennium received several new features during the refit, including the Retreat suite enclave, the Qsine specialty restaurant, a new thermal suite and more.

All of the ship’s staterooms and suites were also update with new designs and furniture to offer what Celebrity calls “modern luxury.”

Other areas that went through redesigned during the refurbishment include the Oceanview Café, the Passport Bar, The Library and more.

When Celebrity Edge departs Port Everglades on Saturday, it will mark the first revenue cruise with paying passengers on a large cruise ship sailing from a U.S. port in more than 15 months.

It's also another major news item for Royal Caribbean Group, which owns Celebrity Cruises, and has had a busy month with the Celebrity Millennium and Adventure of the Seas relaunching service in the Caribbean, and the Freedom of the Seas recently completing a test cruise for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention earlier in the week.

Saturday Port Everglades Highlights:

  • The city of Ft. Lauderdale along with Broward County and Royal Caribbean Group will open the day at 10 a.m. with a press conference.
  • Press conference speakers are Jonathan Daniels, Port Everglades Chief Executive and Port Director;  Michael Udine, Broward County Vice Mayor; Brian Abel, Senior Vice President, Hotel Operations, Celebrity; Richard Fain, Chairman & CEO, Royal Caribbean Group and Captain Kate McCue, Celebrity Edge Captain.

Edge Sailing Details:

  • The Edge will be under the command of American Captain Kate McCue.
  • The week-long itinerary is expected to depart from Terminal 25 at Port Everglades, which is said to be one of the most modern cruise terminals in operation. 
  • Port Everglades will host a virtual sail-away party on Facebook Live starting at 6 p.m., while locals are encouraged to cheer on the ship at Harbor Beach or Dr Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park.
  • Calls include Costa Maya, Cozumel and Nassau, with three days at sea.

Onboard

  • 1,195 guests for an occupancy rate of 41.2 per cent. The 2018-built ship can take 2,900 guests at 100 per cent occupancy.
  • Two unvaccinated adults.
  • 24 unvaccinated children.
  • 100 per cent of crew have been vaccinated.

Celebrity Cruises announced its return cruising today as the Celebrity Millennium will homeport in St. Maarten starting on June 5.

Beginning March 25, guests can book the new seven-night itineraries departing through August.

The ship will sail two different weeklong itineraries. One will call on Aruba, Curaçao and Barbados and a second itinerary will call on Tortola, St. Lucia and Barbados.

The ship will sail with the vaccinated crew and will be available to vaccinated adult guests and children under the age of 18 with a negative PCR test result within 72 hours of embarkation, according to a press release.

Guests can take advantage of special air and sea pricing offering exceptional savings on all Summer 2021 St. Maarten sailings starting at $1,999 per person for a veranda stateroom.

Cruise lines must move quickly and creatively to redeploy ships

At last count, at least 27 cruise ships in Asia have had to cancel or modify not only single itineraries but in some cases entire seasons in response to the Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak in China. 
Fixing that kind of disruption on short notice is no small feat, especially for lines whose ships are being turned away from ports or are dealing with outbreaks onboard. 
For example, it took weeks for Celebrity Cruises to rework itineraries for the Celebrity Millennium, which was in the midst of its Asia cruise season when the outbreak occurred in China. 
After talks with the deployment team, travel advisors and port and health authorities, the cruise line cancelled its remaining Asia cruises, starting with its Feb. 15 sailing. 
It will instead arrive in Los Angeles on March 20, said Celebrity Cruises CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo. There it will conduct free sailings for first responders, active military and veterans. It will also sell a series of revenue cruises and donate the net proceeds to charities and foundations that help first responders and the military.
“At the end of the day, you really have to make the right decision for your guests,” she said. “Unfortunately, with coronavirus, there’s been growing concern for travelling to that region. Safety is paramount to us. It was clearly not our desire or intention to leave that region, but we felt it was the prudent thing to do in the short term. You just didn’t know each day what was going to happen.”
Celebrity’s sister cruise line Royal Caribbean International made a similar decision: Its China-based Spectrum of the Seas is going to Australia, where it will give free cruises to first responders who helped fight the recent devastating wildfires.
The Millennium, which was renovated last year, will make a three-day stop in Hawaii en route to Los Angeles to equip the ship to be able to hook up to shore power once there.
“Redeploying the ship is one thing,” Lutoff-Perlo said. “We had to work with the deployment team to put the itineraries together. We had to work with the global marine organization on how to get shore power on Millennium in just five weeks.”
She said that anybody who understands the complexity of this knows “it’s heroic to be able to do this.”
Details of the new sailings are still being worked out, but Celebrity offered a rough sketch.
Once in California, the Millennium will operate three four-day cruises and one five-day cruise for revenue. As of now, it will also host four two-day cruises for first responders, active military, veterans and their families.
The Millennium will resume its regular Alaska season on May 22. The ship’s Japan cruises are still scheduled for later this year.
Lutoff-Perlo said her team has had to answer several questions, such as whether or not they will be able to sell the new itineraries on such short notice. In response, she said that the staff has had to deal with many crises before, such as the 9/11 attacks, and that they are prepared to make adjustments.
They are still finalizing all the ports, but she said once the relevant officials found out that the cruises would be used to benefit first responders and military, they were willing to be more accommodating.
“As you can imagine, we went back and forth a lot as we fine-tuned these itineraries and figured out what we wanted to do, and every time we went back to every port we talked to, they couldn’t have been more gracious, and they couldn’t have been more wonderful,” she said.
Other lines are still figuring out what to do with their ships, citing the complexity of making such big changes on such short notice to frustrated customers. 
Holland America Line said in an online blog post last week that it was figuring out a solution for its Asia-based Westerdam, on which it cancelled sailings through March 14.
In a statement, the line said it was “still working through the extremely complex factors and decisions of itinerary planning. We understand that our guests are eager to learn more about their departures, and we are assessing future cruise itineraries as quickly as possible.”
For travel advisors, the slew of itinerary changes and cancellations has had them working overtime to keep up with changes happening while their clients were at sea as well as awaiting the fate of ships with upcoming departures. 
Michelle Fee, CEO of Cruise Planners, said the last time this many cruises had to redeploy from a region this quickly was after 9/11 when nearly all ships repositioned to the U.S.
And despite the logistical difficulty of having so many ships change itineraries on such short notice, Fee said this response points to one of the industry’s best qualities in a time like this: “Unlike land destinations, the upside is that cruise lines can move their hardware. At this point, China and parts of Asia have completely shut down, whereas the ships are just relocating.”
Fee was among several advisors who said the biggest challenge is not knowing “what decisions the cruise lines will make and what types of refunds or accommodations will be offered.” 
Linda Terrill, a cruise specialist with the Luxury Travel Group, an independent affiliate of Brownell Travel, agreed. She had clients on a Seabourn Ovation sailing in Asia that was eventually cancelled. 
“The most challenging part was spending so much time just checking, checking and rechecking,” she said. “Searching and contacting the sales managers and saying, ‘Tell me what to do.’” 
Terrill said the challenges are “all-encompassing.”
“But these are long-time clients, and they were so worried, and I kept putting myself in their shoes and saying, ‘What would I do?’” Terrill said. 
In the end, she said, “All’s well that ended well,” and she added that she understands what the cruise companies are facing. 
“The lines are completely overwhelmed,” she said. She said one sales manager told her, “We’re just trying to get people home right now.” 
Fee said last week that the communication from cruise lines had improved. 
“In the beginning of the coronavirus crisis, some cruise lines made decisions and communicated them immediately, while others took a bit longer,” she said. “In the last weeks, we have seen a robust amount of communication from the cruise lines, which is helpful.”
And although the industry has borne the brunt of negative travel headlines due to the challenges on Princess Cruises’ Diamond Princess, Fee is among those who hope that once everyone disembarks the ship, “the story will die down.” 
“If history repeats itself,” Fee said, “a few weeks afterwards, we should get back to normal booking trends.”

Royal Caribbean Cruises will deliver a million protective surgical masks into China as the country battles to contain the coronavirus outbreak.

Richard Fain, the chairman and chief executive of Royal Caribbean Cruises, said the cruise company would work with suppliers to deliver the N-95 protective masks to China for the country’s government.

Face masks are reportedly selling out in cities across Asia as concerns over the virus grow.

More than 1,300 people are known to have died from the virus, including six health workers in China.

Local authorities in the country have reportedly struggled to provide protective equipment such as respiratory masks and goggles in hospitals, according to the BBC.

Fain said: “We admire the all-out efforts of the Chinese government and people to address this crisis and we want to bring our resources to bear to help their efforts.”

Royal Caribbean International president and chief executive Michael Bayley said the line would move a ship to China to carry out a series of complimentary sailings to thank medical personnel once the virus outbreak had ended.

Royal has also revealed that Spectrum of the Seas will offer complimentary cruises sailing from Sydney for Australia’s first responder community and Celebrity Millennium will provide ex-US sailings for firefighters in California following the wildfires.

Royal Caribbean Cruises announced it will dedicate two ships to "humanitarian efforts in Australia and California" to support those affected by recent crises in both areas.
Both the Spectrum of the Seas and Celebrity Millennium, which is out of service due to the coronavirus outbreak, will redeploy for these sailings. 
The 2019-built Spectrum of the Seas will move Australia and be deployed on complimentary cruises sailing from Sydney in support of Australia's first responder community, according to a statement.
The ship has been out of service since mid-January due to the coronavirus outbreak, with cruises cancelled through mid-March.
"When things go wrong, this is a company that wants to find a way to help," said Richard Fain, chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises. "At Royal Caribbean, we consider ourselves fortunate to be able to use our ships in a positive way during difficult times."
"We are in a fortunate position to offer these brave and selfless members of the Australian community the opportunity to join us for a few days and let them relax and unwind in the company of other volunteers and first responders," added Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International. "By welcoming and accommodating them aboard Spectrum of the Seas, we hope to recognize their contribution and offer them our hospitality."
Fain said Royal Caribbean was working with its suppliers to deliver one million N-95 protective masks into China for government distribution into affected areas.
"We admire the all-out efforts of the Chinese government and people to address this crisis, and we want to bring our resources to bear to help their efforts," Fain said.
In addition, the Celebrity Millennium is moving to the West Coast of the U.S. earlier than previously scheduled ahead of her Alaska program and will offer a series of "Cruising for Heroes" voyages in support of California firefighters, other first responders and veterans. 
These voyages will run through March and April. A variety of three-, four- and five-night sailings have been added to the brand's offerings to travel the breathtaking Pacific Coast. The sailings will leave from Los Angeles and details will be announced soon.

Cruise lines have responded to a wave of travel and entry restrictions from countries across southeast Asia by cancelling and changing itineraries amid the coronavirus outbreak. Harry Kemble rounds up all the latest developments.

Royal Caribbean International has cancelled two Quantum of the Seas sailings departing from Singapore on February 15 and February 24.

Affected passengers have been given full refunds, the line said.

A Royal spokesperson added: “Royal Caribbean’s number one priority is ensuring the health and welfare of our guests and crew.

“We will continue to monitor conditions and will share other itinerary adjustments should they become necessary.

“The Singapore market remains of great importance to us and we look forward to returning there very soon.”

Royal Caribbean Cruises has lifted its ban on passport holders from China, Hong Kong and Macau after adopting the controversial policy last week.

A statement from Royal Caribbean Cruises, parent of Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Azamara and Silversea confirmed the reversal on Tuesday.

Every passenger who has travelled from, to or through mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau 15 days prior to the departure date is still banned from boarding any of Royal’s vessels.

Norwegian Cruise Line has pulled its entire Asia programme for the newly refurbished ship, Norwegian Spirit.

All sailings between 15 and December 7 have been dropped and full refunds are being offered, along with 10% future cruise credit.

The line also said it would cover up to $300 per person for any air change fees.

“While it is always our intention to maintain original itineraries, at times, unforeseen circumstances require us to make modifications,” the line said. “We appreciate our guests’ patience during this time.”

Celebrity Cruises has cancelled Celebrity Millennium’s sailing departing from Hong Kong on February 15 and altered two Celebrity Constellation itineraries to avoid Singapore and Thailand.

Constellation will spend more time in Cochin, Goa and Mumbai, instead of calling into Phuket, Thailand.

Cunard ship Queen Mary 2 is to miss several ports in southeast Asia and will sail direct to Fremantle, Australia, during its world cruise.

The vessel had been scheduled to call into Phuket, Thailand; Pulau Penang Island and Klang in Malaysia; Singapore; and Hong Kong.

Cunard said the “various travel and entry restrictions…are increasingly impacting ship itineraries and connecting travel” across the world.

Holland America Line (HAL) ship Westerdam was stopped from docking in Laem Chabang, Thailand, a day after the ship had been diverted from Japan.

On Tuesday, HAL said: “We are actively working on this matter and will provide an update when we are able.”

Princess Cruises on Wednesday confirmed a further 39 passengers onboard Diamond Princess tested positive for coronavirus. The total has now risen to 174 confirmed cases out of 3,700 passengers and crew on board.

The ship is the largest centre of cases outside China.

P&O Cruises is removing calls into Shanghai on March 5-6 and Hong Kong on March 9-10 as part of Arcadia’s world cruise and will announce alternative ports “as soon as possible”.

The UK line said: “We are very closely monitoring and assessing the impact of the latest developments and health advisories, as well as various travel and entry restrictions which are increasingly impacting ship itineraries and connecting travel.

“We are actively seeking to mitigate these risks to our guests and crew, and are making appropriate adjustments to our operations to protect all onboard our ships.”

The plight of an older couple that was put off a Celebrity Cruises ship in Australia mid-cruise illustrates some of the tricky issues facing cruise lines when passengers are afflicted with dementia.

The couple, John and Adry Arnold, had booked a nine-day cruise on the Celebrity Millennium in November to celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary.

Celebrity said it decided to debark Adry Arnold when a housekeeper found her alone and disoriented in her cabin. Her husband was on a shore excursion and could not be reached.

When he returned to the ship, Celebrity had their bags packed and had arranged for an ambulance to take them to a hospital in Cairns. The Arnolds, who live in a town a few hours west of Sydney, will get a pro-rated refund.

In an interview with a TV station in Perth, John Arnold said his wife, 78, has dementia but can still perform familiar activities. “A lot of things she can do by rote, having done it many times,” he told the “Today Tonight” program on Channel 7 in Perth.

Arnold said his wife had been up and down the same staircase on the ship but apparently got confused returning to her cabin. Arnold had been leaving her on the ship at ports for an hour at a time to go ashore.

He told the program he was “gobsmacked” by the decision to remove him, which he said was not explained. “They didn’t tell me a thing,” he said, “except the so-called doctor considered that she was a liability and had to be taken off the ship.”

Arnold was critical of how abruptly he was removed from the ship and said the hospital didn’t know what to do with them when they arrived.

“I’ll always remember the wedding anniversary from being dumped from an American ship in Cairns,” he said.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., parent of Celebrity Cruises, said in a statement that it acted out of concern for Adry Arnold’s safety.

“Every year, thousands of guests with medical conditions sail onboard Celebrity Cruises ships,” the statement said. “However, for their own safety and the safety of others, these guests must be able to care for themselves.”

Curtis Mase, a Miami attorney who often defends cruise lines in lawsuits, said the liability issues are very real.

“Imagine what happens in this situation where a cruise line allows someone who is physically or mentally not able to take care of themselves to travel without someone, they then cause some kind of safety concern,” he said. “Take your pick: They accidentally lower a lifeboat and injure someone as a result, or they trigger some alarm or go into someplace they shouldn’t have gone.

“All of a sudden the cruise line is liable because they didn’t have a reasonable policy for how someone like that could travel,” Mase said.

He said with advanced notice, the cruise line probably could have arranged an accommodation that would have averted the debarkation.

Cynthia Martinez, a spokeswoman for RCCL, said travel agents with clients who may be mentally diminished should have a conversation about it before booking a cruise.

Mary Beth Lantzy, a spokeswoman for the Alzheimer’s Association, said when considering a trip for someone with dementia, agents should try to visit places that were familiar before the onset of dementia and that involve as few changes in daily routine as possible.

A 78-year old passenger was disembarked early from the Celebrity Millennium in Cairns, Australia, after she was found alone and disoriented in her cabin.

The cruise line said it took the step because was it concerned for the safety and well-being of the woman, identified as Adry Arnold.

Arnold’s husband was on a shore excursion at the time and couldn’t be reached.

In a statement, Celebrity said it carries thousands of guests every year with pre-existing medical conditions. "However, for their own safety and the safety of others, these guests must be able to care for themselves,” the statement said.

Arnold’s nephew criticized Celebrity, saying its response was “a disgusting way to treat anybody, let alone an elderly couple,” according to a report in the Cairns Post.

Cynthia Martinez, a spokewoman for Celebrity parent company Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., said a member of its care team arranged transport to a local hospital for the couple, and that they would get a prorated refund for the unused part of their nine-day cruise.

She said a care team member contacted the Arnolds at the hospital, but that they requested no further contact be made.

Power HungryWhen the Carnival Triumph is firing on all cylinders, its six massive Wartsila-Sulzer diesel engines generate enough electricity to power 60,000 to 70,000 average homes.

But after a fire in February charred electrical cables passing through the engine room, they couldn't generate anything.

The Triumph limped back to port under tow, able to muster only minimal emergency power that left passengers with few of the basic comforts they had anticipated on a cruise.

Increasingly, cruise ships rely on onboard-generated electricity for everything from propulsion to fresh water to cool air. And when cruises are spoiled or canceled, more often than not something electrical is to blame.

Just this year, cruises have been canceled or cut short on ships ranging from the Carnival Dream to the Sun Princess for electrical issues. The Triumph and Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Millennium have been taken out of service for weeks, resulting in multiple canceled voyages and significant red ink on operational balance sheets.

In the latest example, the three-month-old Royal Princess suffered a Sept. 22 blackout in the Mediterranean and had to end a 12-day cruise after nine days to make repairs.

The cruise industry, and Carnival in particular, is responding by adding and rearranging equipment to provide better fire resistance and more redundancy when things go wrong.

Carnival Corp. alone has budgeted between $600 million and $700 million to pay for such changes across its brands' fleets.

"Reliability is extraordinarily important to our industry," said Mark Jackson, Carnival Corp.'s vice president for technical operations.

After the Triumph fire, Carnival Corp. performed a vulnerability analysis of its fleets and found that some of its ships were susceptible to the same flaw that felled both the Triumph and, in 2010, the Carnival Splendor.

Like the Triumph, the Carnival Splendor suffered an engine fire that left it without propulsion. Although the fires had different origins, they both burned cables that ran across the ceiling from one engine room through the other to an aft switchboard.

"While we had a large number of diesel generators still operational, we were unable to provide power to the ship," Jackson said. "So we are going to reroute the cables that run from the forward engine room through the aft engine room [and] that could cause a potential vulnerability.

"If we lose one engine room, we don't want to lose the other," Jackson said.

The rewiring has been completed on the Triumph and the Carnival Sunshine, he said, and is under way on other Carnival ships as needed.

Though propulsion is the most important use of electric power on modern cruise ships, it is far from the only one.

When the Triumph lost power, it also lost the ability to run the ship's air conditioners, elevators, stoves, refrigerators and even the pumps that drive the water and sewage systems, meaning the toilets didn't work.

The loss of passenger comforts was perhaps the biggest reason why the Triumph fire became so notorious in media reports and why Carnival suffered such a drop in demand in the weeks following the incident.

Air conditioning is a particularly big power user on modern cruise ships, where giant compressors draw dozens of megawatts of power through medium- to high-voltage lines.

Marine air conditioning chillers are rated at up to 1,600 tons, compared with 2 to 5 tons for home units.

Especially while in Florida or the Bahamas, air conditioning uses about half a cruise ship's power supply while in port, and about a third of the electricity it generates at sea, Jackson said.

The rest goes to "hotel tasks," a term that covers everything from lighting to galley equipment to guest services computers to water desalination gear. 

The grounded, three-prong outlets in cabins that passengers use for hair dryers and clock radios draw electricity from the same generators that drive the ship. 

"Our refrigerators are a lot bigger. Our stoves are a lot bigger. Our washers and dryers are a lot bigger," Jackson said. "But in general, we basically have the same functions you'll find in a home or hotel or anything like that." 

Cruise ships became even bigger users of electricity over the past 50 years as methods of propulsion changed. 

At one time, ships plied the ocean on sails, which were supplanted by steam power, then oil-fired engines. As recently as 10 years ago, Norwegian Cruise Line's vessel the Norway used steam boilers to make its propellers spin. 

After the 1970s, cruise lines increasingly adopted diesel generators to provide power because they offer the best combination of energy efficiency and redundancy, Jackson said. 

The key components in such systems are the large 8- to 16-cylinder diesel engines, which burn oil and turn a crankshaft connected to an alternator to create electricity. 
Carnival TriumphMost sizeable cruise ships have six main engines in two engine rooms. Buried in the depths of the ship, the engine rooms are hot and incredibly noisy. The ship's engineers monitor them from a self-contained control room full of gauges and displays.

From the engines, the electricity goes through cables to a switchboard, which distributes it to various uses. The switchboards are arrayed in head-high cabinets running the length of a corridor. To ensure redundancy, there are at least two main switchboards.

The power from the generators is relatively high voltage, which can only be used directly for some functions such as propulsion and air conditioning. For other uses, the voltage must be stepped down by means of transformers to standard 220- and 110-volt systems, so that most of the hotel equipment, such as clothes washers and dryers, can use it.

The final two important pieces of electrical equipment are for propulsion. The propellers are turned by a large electric motor, in which, like all electric motors, cable windings create magnetic pulses that spin a shaft.

To vary the speed of the spin, the motors have a cycloconverter, so that a constant voltage from the engines can be easily and nimbly managed to quicken or slow the propellers.

Breakdowns in any of these components can result in ships that are unable to move.
A rotating propulsion pod being installed.In 2011, MSC Cruises cited a faulty electrical panel for a blackout that ended a Baltic cruise in Stockholm. Passengers were flown home, and the next cruise was canceled.

Last year, most of a 17-day voyage on the Azamara Quest was canceled after a fire caused a blackout on the ship off the Philippines.

A month earlier, a generator fire on the Costa Allegra left it adrift for three days in the Indian Ocean, without hotel services for its 636 passengers.

And earlier this year, Princess Cruises canceled a voyage on the Sun Princess from Singapore as people arrived at the terminal, because a switchboard failed following a 14-day drydock at a nearby yard.

Some electrical failures have triggered government investigations.

In 2010, the Cunard Line's Queen Mary 2 was approaching Barcelona when there was an abrupt explosion in one of its switchboards.

In that case, the U.K.'s Marine Accident Investigation Branch reported that a component designed as insulation had vaporized after an electric arc shot through it, creating pressure that knocked a steel fireproof door nearly off of its hinges.

"The amount of energy released was easily capable of causing fatal injuries," the investigative branch reported.

The agency warned all cruise operators of the threat posed by "harmonic distortion," a vulnerability with some motor designs that supplier ABB likens to "electrical pollution."

Investigators said it was fortunate the blackout didn't cause any navigational problems.

"However," the report continued, "losing control of a large cruise liner due to an electrical blackout, with 3,823 people onboard, is a serious concern. This accident demonstrates how electrical instability can cause unpredictable and potentially disastrous consequences in marine high-voltage electrical networks."

A new design for independent propulsion modules has also increased the number of cruises canceled for electrical reasons.

About 20 years ago, ships began to be built with their electric motors at the end of a strut beneath the ship in a self-contained pod. The concept was developed by ABB and Finland's Kvaerner Masa Yards. Kvaerner Masa called its product an Azipod, a reference to the 360-degree measure of a compass, connoting the pod's ability to rotate 360 degrees.

"The advantage of a pod is they give you this phenomenal maneuverability in the water, because the pods can rotate around," said Celebrity Cruises President Michael Bayley.

"So it allows you to move with more delicacy and more efficiency," he said. But the pod's Achilles' heel has been its spotty reliability. "It is an incredibly complex piece of equipment," Bayley said.

The Millennium developed its problem on a cruise between Vancouver and Seward, Alaska, when a coil on the motor burned out. The ship was idled for three days for repairs, but on the next cruise a similar thing happened in a different part of the motor.

"We lost a little bit of confidence in that [motor]," said Greg Purdy, vice president for operations at Celebrity.

Because the inside of the pod is so cramped, the practical way to effect major repairs is to remove the pod entirely in a drydock. So Celebrity had to cancel the balance of the Millennium's seven-day cruise, plus all of four other cruises, to send the ship to Grand Bahama Island for repairs.

One Wall Street analyst estimated that the cost of refunds, transportation for passengers, repairs and the cancelled cruises totaled $31 million.

On early models, the bearings tended to burn out prematurely. In 2011, Carnival Corp. won a $24 million jury verdict in a suit claiming damages from the failure of the Queen Mary 2's pods.

The year before, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. settled out of court and received compensation from the same manufacturer, Rolls Royce, after seven years of litigation.

Carnival Cruise Lines was an early adopter of pods, putting them on six ships beginning with the Elation in 1998. But by 2000, it had to cancel cruises for a pod breakdown on the Paradise and for preventive maintenance on the Elation.

Carnival moved away from the new technology as it began building more ships at Italy's Fincantieri shipyard.

"The shaft-driven propeller, they're very reliable," said Carnival's Jackson. "If you have a bearing issue in the water, you can change it with divers relatively easily. If you have a problem with a pod, basically the only choice you have is to pull the ship out of the water."

That said, Carnival's next ship, the Vista, will use pods. Fincantieri is starting to feel more comfortable with the technology, Jackson said.
After a drydock to replace the defective propulsion pod, the Celebrity Millennium was refloated.The Carnival Vista, and the rest of Carnival's fleet eventually, will also feature not one but two backup generators. The emergency generator held in reserve for vital functions like navigation and engine-room controls will be supplemented by another that will provide hotel services.

The two will also back up each other, providing more redundancy. When the emergency generator on the Carnival Dream failed earlier this year, Carnival ended a Caribbean cruise early rather than sail without it.

"This is kind of the backup to the backup," Jackson said. With a second auxiliary generator, a Carnival ship can lose both engine rooms and still have power to run elevators, to make sure all the toilets function, to have hot food for guests and at least some air conditioning.

The auxiliary generator will be connected to both the main switchboard and the emergency switchboard so it can be run through one or the other depending on the need.

"It will have multiple means that it can provide power," Jackson said.

Celebrity Cruises said it will have its own organization in Asia, separate from the current international structure.

Effective immediately, Kelvin Tan will serve as Celebrity's commercial director, Asia-Pacific.

Celebrity said Tan and his team will be based out of Singapore, and will oversee the brand's marketing, trade support and sales in the region.

Tan will continue to partner with current international representatives in the region, Celebrity said.

While Celebrity's ships have Asian itineraries, it is primarily marketed in North America.

“The Asia-Pacific region has great potential for Celebrity Cruises, and this will best position the brand for future growth in this dynamic region," Celebrity CEO Michael Bayley said in a statement.

A new propulsion pod for the Celebrity Millennium is transported to a ship in Rotterdam, Netherlands.The choice faced by Celebrity Cruises management wasn't pleasant. They could try to repair a damaged propulsion pod on the Celebrity Millennium at the risk of a third failure, or they could swallow the millions of dollars of expense required to cancel four cruises, send 2,000 people home by chartered plane and swap out the pod in an unscheduled drydock.

They decided to spend the cash.

"We certainly didn't want to put the ship back in operation and then a month or two later have another incident," said Celebrity CEO Michael Bayley. "We felt as if that was simply not acceptable."

In a phone briefing this week, Celebrity offered a rare behind-the-scenes account of its decision-making process as it struggled with a balky ship during prime season in Alaska.

The briefing was an example of the heightened scrutiny to which cruise lines feel they must respond after witnessing the negative publicity resulting from the fire earlier this year on the Carnival Triumph.

"Certainly we're interested in being very transparent about everything," Bayley said.

The problem Celebrity confronted has periodically plagued nearly every cruise line that uses pods, the self-contained motors bolted beneath the stern that began to be used in the 1990s.

Although they have many advantages in terms of maneuverability, reliability has been an issue. Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., Celebrity's parent company, settled a long lawsuit in 2010 with Rolls-Royce, the maker of the Mermaid brand of pods used on four of Celebrity's older ships.

However, Bayley said, the latest problem on the Millennium was a different one, having to do with the motor's electrical parts, not the bearings, which were the focus of the lawsuit.

The first electrical failure on the Millennium forced Celebrity to delay departure of its Aug. 9 cruise from Seward, Alaska, to Vancouver by several days and to cancel all the port calls in Alaska.

After repairs, the ship made it to Vancouver, but on the return to Seward, a similar electrical problem flared in a different part of the pod. That was a surprise, Bayley said.
Again, experts were brought in. The cruise paused in Ketchikan, Alaska, while the pod was examined, and reluctantly the conclusion was reached that the pod had to be replaced.

That decision triggered a series of logistical tests. The first was getting the 2,000 passengers home from Ketchikan, which has a population of 14,000 and an airport with a single, 7,500-foot runway.

"It's a beautiful destination to go to, but it's not a destination designed to move a couple of thousand people from," said Bayley. Celebrity chartered a half dozen jets at a cost of several million dollars to do the job and sent 30 people from Miami headquarters to help.

Next, Celebrity had to arrange a drydock on short notice. Bayley said Celebrity worked down the list of shipyards on the west coast of North America and even looked in Russia and Asia before settling on Grand Bahama Shipyard, in Freeport, where a part ownership by Royal Caribbean allowed for the rearrangement of some schedules.

"Like all situations, there's always a puzzle palace," Bayley said.

Celebrity had a spare pod in Europe, but it had to be transported from Rotterdam, Netherlands. After rejecting the idea of air-freighting the 250-ton pod, Celebrity chartered a ship to deliver it.

It's a four-day job to remove the damaged pod and install the new one. "It's fairly complex," Bayley said. "Obviously we've got the best technical people in the world, and we're feeling pretty comfortable with the process."

After the old pod comes off, it will be returned to France on the chartered cargo ship, to be rebuilt.

Testing of the new pod is expected to be done by Sept. 12. Bayley said Celebrity was not sure whether it could offer some kind of cruise between that date and its next scheduled cruise from San Diego.

"Our intention is to be in San Diego with full operations on Sept. 22."

In the meantime, Celebrity has had to keep the Millennium's 843 crew members occupied with deep cleaning of cabins, additional specialty training and the relocation of the future cruise desk to a different deck.

The Millennium's chefs are using the time to dream up a few surprises for guests who have booked the San Diego cruise, Bayley said.

The total cost of the Millennium incident to Celebrity hasn't been disclosed, but Bayley said it would include the compensation for two impaired cruises and four canceled ones, which all involved full refunds, plus the housing and food for affected guests, air change fees, future cruise certificates, plane charters to Ketchikan and the lost onboard revenue from the scrubbed cruises, in addition to the repairs. One Wall Street analyst has estimated the cost at $31 million, not including the repair itself, which is insured.

"The brand was having a really great year, so it's a little unfortunate," Bayley said.

Dondra Ritzenthaler, Celebrity's senior vice president of sales, said the breakdown had not had any noticeable impact on bookings, a fact she attributed mainly to travel agent support.

"Because we've had an authentic partnership with our travel partners for years, when something like this happens, they are really rallying behind us," she said.

Just in case, Bayley is making a video for travel agents to recap Celebrity's response to Millennium's problems.

"We want his genuine apology as the leader of our brand to really be said in a more formal way," Ritzenthaler said.

Celebrity Cruises called a premature end to the Alaska season for the Celebrity Millennium, canceling the ship's remaining four cruises on its schedule.

Celebrity acted after mechanical problems with the ship's propulsion units kept it in port for at least part of the last two cruises between Vancouver and Seward, Alaska.

The canceled cruises, in addition to the current one, were scheduled to depart Aug. 23, Aug. 30, Sept. 6 and Sept. 13. Celebrity is in the process of contacting passengers on those cruises and rebooking or refunding them.

Affected passengers are being offered a full refund and a 25% future cruise credit.

The next scheduled sailing of Millennium will be a Panama Canal transit cruise from San Diego to Fort Lauderdale on Sept. 22.

Millennium carries 2,038 passengers at double occupancy.
