Encore designer throws Seabourn guests a curve

Encore designer throws Seabourn guests a curve

SINGAPORE -- Guests boarding the new Seabourn Encore may notice that its lines and designs are softer and more curvaceous than the other Seabourn ships, said Adam Tihany, lead designer for the new ship.
The Seabourn Encore arrived here on Jan. 5 on a voyage from the shipyard in Italy where it was built. It is scheduled to depart on Jan. 7 on an inaugural cruise to Bali.
Tihany, president of New York-based Tihany Design, said one example is the Seabourn Square gathering spot on Deck 7 that serves as a library/guest services/coffee bar for the ship. "It's literally not a square anymore," he said.

On the Encore, the area has been opened up to guests by lowering partitions that once kept service personnel walled off. Now, the area is shaped in more of a circle. It has also been brightened with a lighter color scheme.
Another example is the bar in the Observation Lounge, which has been converted from a square shape to a circle. Tihany's design also makes the lounge brighter by incorporating a skylight into the ceiling above the bar.
In addition to being more "sexy" and aesthetically pleasing, the reduction in the number of hard angles and sharp edges will reduce the wear and tear on crew members bumping into these obstacles, Tihany said.
"The ship is taking into consideration how passengers move in space," Tihany said.
The Encore is the first new Seabourn ship since the 2011 delivery of the Seabourn Quest. It has an additional deck, raising the capacity at double occupancy from 450 to 600 guests.

The design of the previous three Seabourn ships, including Seabourn Odyssey and Seabourn Sojourn, was more "Nordic," Tihany said. Tthe Encore and its sister ship due in 2018, Seabourn Ovation, will look more like luxury yachts, he said.
Tihany spoke in a news conference on the ship with Seabourn president Rick Meadows. Tihany said his favorite space on the new ship is The Retreat, a relaxation area of 11 cabanas surrounding a whirlpool and covered by an arched canvas dome. Entrance is limited to guests who pay the rental fee for a cabana, which is $349 on sea days and $249 on port days.

Seabourn bans smoking on balconies

Seabourn bans smoking on balconies

Seabourn Sojourn

Seabourn will ban smoking on the balconies of its ships starting in late November with a Seabourn Quest voyage departing from Buenos Aires.
In a bulletin to loyalty club members, it said changes were being made “to better align with your wishes,” based on surveys conducted during the past year, as well as comments from guests and travel agents.
The rollout of the policy will continue with the Dec. 4 departure of Seabourn Encore from Athens, the Dec. 5 departure of Seabourn Sojourn from Dubai and the Dec. 7 departure of Seabourn Odyssey from Lisbon.
Designated outdoor smoking areas remain, including the starboard half of the Sky Bar on Deck 9, the starboard half of the open terrace aft of The Club on Deck 5 and the starboard side of the open terrace aft of Seabourn Square on Deck. 7.

Landry & Kling Report Top 10 Ships for Top-Tier Events

Landry & Kling Report Top 10 Ships for Top-Tier Events

Criteria includes ship size, availability of meetings venues, itinerary selection and quality of meals and staterooms. Ships chosen for Landry & Kling’s Top 10 Ships for Top-Tier Events list must have less than 500 rooms.

Cruise-ship-event pioneer Landry & Kling, which has specialized in cruise meetings and dockside ship charters for global events since 1982, has released a list of the Top 10 Ships for Top-Tier Events.
Founders Joyce Landry and Josephine Kling were inducted into the Cruise Lines International Association Hall of Fame in 2009, as “visionaries who led the way in seagoing corporate meetings and incentives.” They have introduced concepts such as cruise ships as floating hotels, such as at the 2005 Super Bowl.
Kling, president of Landry & Kling, says the company is seeing a resurgence of high-end event travel, which “took a vacation” a few years ago. She points out that as cruises have become better (and better-known), their appeal has grown for incentive travel, customer-hosted events and much more
“In the early days, cash rewards were the rule, and then products,” she said. “But now, experiences are valued more than things, and travel has been documented as the most successful reward in corporate motivation and bonding.”
Kling says a company dangling an immersive cruise helps galvanize the potential participants and their spouses or significant others. Corporations also find that hosting staff on a ship keeps everyone together in a shared experience, which helps reinforce company values. People don’t disperse as they may on a golf course, and there is plenty to do at night, unlike many upscale resorts.
Kling underlines the use of the term “top-tier” on the list, rather than “luxury”; she notes that not all expedition-class ships have the full features of today’s luxury cruises, but they have other qualities that make them highly desirable.
“Lines such as Lindblad Expeditions may have older ships, but they provide experiences that leave people agog,” she said. “The quality of information is incredible, and if the event isn’t a full-ship charter, the people that meet onboard are like-minded. Participants on those cruises go through a change — an education — that they have shared, and that colors their interaction whenever they meet afterward.”
Itineraries and port experiences are high on the list of important factors for meeting, conference and event sales. Kling praised Larry Pimentel, president and CEO of Azamara Club Cruises, for the company’s extended stays in port in so many areas of the world.
“It really opened the door,” she said.
Criteria for the company’s top picks included:
- Small size (under about 500 rooms) providing an intimate cruise experience
- Onboard venues for meetings and group events
- Exceptional meals and personalized service
- Elegantly appointed staterooms
- All-inclusive pricing, with first-class amenities
- Intriguing itineraries
Kling noted that there are all sorts of creative ways to use the smaller ships on the list.
“The first question is always numbers — how many will be attending,” she said. “But you can do things like charter the two SeaDream ships — we have done that for a larger group, and they really enjoyed visiting one another and having races. And on ships where some of the lower category rooms may not be as appealing to an upscale cruiser, you can negotiate charter rates, and you don’t need to use every cabin.”
Landry & Kling’s top choices are:
1. Avalon Siem Reap - Avalon Waterways, 18 rooms
2. National Geographic Orion - Lindblad Expeditions, 53 rooms
3. SeaDream I - SeaDream Yacht Club, 56 rooms
4. Wind Spirit - Windstar Cruises, 73 rooms
5. Seabourn Quest - Seabourn Cruise Line, 225 rooms
6. Europa 2 - Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, 258 rooms
7. Silver Spirit - Silversea Cruises, 270 rooms
8. Azamara Journey - Azamara Club Cruises, 338 rooms
9. Seven Seas Mariner - Regent Seven Seas Cruises, 349 rooms
10. Crystal Serenity - Crystal Cruises, 535 rooms

Making the SaleJosephine Kling, president of Landry & Kling, points out that there is a different department in most large companies that handles large meetings and incentives; it is often small and very specialized. Agents tend to work with the regular groups department, which has different pricing and different access. Landry & Kling does work with third parties, including agents, on large events on a revenue-sharing basis.
Kling believes retail cruise agents can benefit even more than meeting planners from a new certification program that Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has created in partnership with Meeting Professionals International. It will be offered to CLIA agents at IMEX America in Las Vegas on Oct. 13 to 15, and again at Cruise360 next June.
“Agents would be even more likely to capitalize on this than meeting planners, since they already understand the cruise industry,” Kling said.

Also, Seabourn and Keller will collaborate on a restaurant that will debut on the Seabourn Quest next year before being expanded to the rest of the fleet, including the new Seabourn Encore, which is due to enter service in late 2016.
Keller has been awarded three Michelin stars for two of his restaurants: The French Laundry in Yountville, Calif., and Per Se in New York. Another restaurant in Yountville, Bouchon, has received one star.
Keller has also authored five cookbooks and is publisher of Finesse Magazine.
"There is really no chef more accomplished or held in higher esteem than Chef Keller, and we are both honored and delighted to have a restaurateur of his stature take our onboard culinary offerings to an even higher level," said Seabourn President Richard Meadows. "His culinary talent and sophisticated cuisine are beyond compare and the perfect match for our guests. We have no doubt our guests will be as excited as we are to taste and enjoy Chef Keller's dishes on our ships."

Seabourn confirms plans for new ship

Seabourn confirms plans for new ship

Seabourn has confirmed plans for a fourth mid-scale ultra luxury ship.
To enter service in 2016, the vessel will replace the capacity being lost with the sale of smaller ships Seabourn Pride, Spirit and Legend which will leave the fleet in April 2014 and the following year.
The new ship will be modelled after the line’s three newest vessels, Seabourn Odyssey, Seabourn Sojourn, and Seabourn Quest, and will encompass the features that have made these ships so successful, the line said
Seabourn president Richard Meadows said: "We are pleased to be moving forward with the plans we announced earlier this year to build a fourth ship similar to the highly regarded new design we introduced with Seabourn Odyssey, Seabourn Sojourn, and Seabourn Quest.
"The experience and the amenities offered by these award-winning ships have raised the bar in ultra-luxury cruising.”
Gabriele Cocco, senior vice president merchant vessels at Italian shipyard Fincantieri said: ”We are very pleased to have acquired a new customer like Seabourn and at the same time to have strengthened our historic partnership with the Carnival Group.
"This agreement is particularly important: it strengthens our leadership in the luxury cruise niche and confirms our primacy in the cruise industry.”
