Chantiers de l’Atlantique has announced it has manufactured its first carbon-fibre mast in collaboration with Lorima, Mulitplast, Avel Robotics, CDK Technologies and SMM.

Sixty-six meters tall and 2 meters wide, the mast weighs approximately 20 tons and can carry a SolidSail of 1,500 square meters.

SolidSail is a foldable sail made of 100 per cent composite materials and has been created by Chantiers de l’Atlantique.

SolidSail is designed to propel Silenseas, which is currently being developed by the French shipbuilding company, and will be the largest wind-powered cruise ship in the world. The concept can also be applied to cargo ships.

The Aeoldrive rig, which comprises the SolidSail mast and sail, is described as being fully automated, able to rotate 360 degrees, and the masts can rotate or tilt 70 degrees to go under bridges.

Chantiers de l’Atlantique said it is spearheading the design and manufacturing of tomorrow’s ships. Partly wind-powered, these ships may see their CO2 emissions reduced by up to 40 per cent, according to a prepared statement. Further work on energy efficiencies will reduce CO2 emissions by 25 to 40 per cent.

Cruise Lines to Submit Seasonal Fuel Consumption Data in Antarctica


For the first time, members of the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) will submit seasonal fuel consumption data.

According to a press release, the initiative is part of the association’s pledge to create a climate change strategy for Antarctic tourism.

The fuel data submission, which will include vessels 9cruise ships) of all sizes, aircraft, and accessory vehicles, will be used within the tourism association to understand the greenhouse gas footprint of the operations in Antarctica, IAATO said.

The results will then be used internally as the basis to monitor and refine emission reduction targets the IAATO membership has collectively agreed to make, it added.

While individual operators are expected and encouraged to go further in their own targets, IAATO operators have also unanimously pledged to track the International Maritime Organization (IMO) target of at least 50 per cent emissions reductions by 2050 compared with 2008 and global goals of net zero before 2050.

This, explained the association, accompanied by an agreement by each member to build their own climate strategy and set their own emission reduction targets, is the start of a collective push to account for and reduce IAATO-Operator emissions.

“Ultimately, we seek to go much further towards net positive impact, but the current challenge in shipping and aviation is that we don’t yet know what future fuels and technologies will be available to us,” said Pam Le Noury, Chair of IAATO’s Climate Change Committee.

“This latest commitment by our Operators to submit their fuel data to the IAATO Secretariat for analysis means that once we have acceleration in the development of sustainable fuels and other technologies, we will be in a strong position to act to reduce emissions further,” she added.

According to IAATO, at its annual meeting, members have open and candid discussions on safety, environmental protection, and self-management with decision-making supported by recommendations developed by the association’s ten dedicated committees and eight working groups.

The meeting concludes annually with the voting in of new commitments and policies on best practices which support the association’s mission.

These latest agreements took place at IAATO’s annual meeting, held in Providence, RI in April, where operators unanimously pledged to build a climate strategy including calculating and reducing industry emissions and setting meaningful and inclusive science-based targets. 

The pledge was shared with the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting in June, where IAATO is an invited expert.

“Cooperative and coordinated international responses are required to understand global climate change and reduce emissions,” said Amanda Lynnes, IAATO Director of Environment & Science Coordination.

“One of IAATO’s strengths is the ability of its diverse membership to take collective action, often over and above what is required by global regulators. Our members remain agile in response to emerging technologies and global recommendations surrounding climate change and are committed to taking powerful steps to act for Antarctica.”

New particulate removal system to be tested on a cruise ship

Italy’s Ecospray will install a recently developed system to eliminate particulate matter and black soot from ship emissions Called a Wet Electrostatic Precipitator (WESP), the first unit will be installed on a cruise ship. Testing will be conducted in collaboration with RINA and SGS in order to validate and assess the technology.

Founded as an engineering company 15 years ago, Ecospray was acquired by Carnival in 2016. Known for its exhaust gas cleaning systems (ECGS) technology, Ecospray has broadened its clean technology portfolio to target the maritime energy transition market.

The WESP system was developed to eliminate visible smoke from the stack, especially during engine start-up and at low loads, by capturing particles (PM2.5 and below) and part of condensable species (SO3).

It can be installed downstream of the DeSOx tower and has low-pressure drops and high removal efficiency. WESP can be integrated into an existing DeSOx tower or installed as a stand-alone unit, for both open-loop and hybrid EGCSs.

Likening it to the use of EGCSs for diesel engines, Ecospray project management leader Filippo Lossani said, “WESP is a ‘bridge’ technology, meaning it’s a true transition technology which will guide us towards the 2030-2050 [decarbonisation] objectives.” Added Mr Lossani, “Considering the ever-increasing focus on issues involving environmental sustainability and health – and given the growing demand for the reduction of polluting emissions – we expect that the standardisation process of dust and particulates will be the necessary next step, and we are ready.”

SGS will also assist Ecospray with the laboratory analyses to test system performance of WESP, while RINA marine senior director Andrea Cogliolo, said the class society will verify and validate the installation drawings on board the ship, establish a test protocol, and issue a report on the results of the project.

SGS I&E Marine Services Geneva CH director Vladimiro Bonamin said SGS will establish the details for the analytical side of the test protocol prepared by RINA, and prepare the QAQC protocol to ensure accurate measurements.
