MSC To Cruise the UK From May 20, No Vaccination Required

MSC To Cruise the UK From May 20, No Vaccination Required

MSC Cruises has announced that it will be offering a “special range of short breaks and week-long cruises around the British Isles” in summer 2021, starting from May 20, for UK holidaymakers only.

Departing from the new terminal in the port of Southampton, these first sailings will kick off with a series of short cruises and will be followed by seven-night sailings visiting “some of the UK’s favourite destinations and offering additional ports of embarkation to guests,” the cruise line said in a press release.

“Our experience of sailing safely and responsibly since August last year in the Mediterranean under our industry-leading protective health and safety protocol has given us a great deal of knowledge and data about safe cruises,” said Gianni Onorato, CEO at MSC Cruises.

“We also remain confident that we will soon be able to welcome British guests back on board one of our ships further afield, once current international travel restrictions are lifted and more of our ships will have restarted across the Mediterranean as well as other areas traditionally favoured by the British,” he added.

Antonio Paradiso, the managing director at MSC Cruises UK & Ireland, said that the cruise line’s hope is to “offer every type of holidaymaker the chance to escape this summer – from grandparents to teens and even the smallest of passengers looking to explore.”

Both vaccinated and non-vaccinated guests would be welcome, Paradiso explained.

“All guests will be tested prior to embarkation, while non-vaccinated guests will also be required to show proof of negative test done within 72 hours prior to embarkation,” he said. “Crew in addition to the protocol-mandated test and 14-day quarantine prior to embarkation will also receive weekly testing, in addition to other ongoing health monitoring measures.”

According to Paradiso, MSC Cruises has carried more than 50,000 guests since its restart of operations in August 2020 under the protection of a health and safety protocol.

“It is built around a comprehensive strategy that includes universal testing of all guests and crew prior to embarkation and periodically throughout the cruise, deep and ongoing sanitation, protected-only shore excursions, as well as many other measures that we are used to in our daily lives, such as social distancing and the wearing of face coverings. We will sail with a reduced capacity so that guests have even more space,” he said.

“Our industry-leading protocol was developed with input from international health experts – including our own ‘Blue-Ribbon’ expert group – and in close cooperation with relevant health, transport and safety authorities and was designed to respond to a fluctuating health situation ashore. This allowed us to support continued cruise operations in the Mediterranean through to today, safely welcoming guests onboard from across the Schengen area throughout the different phases of the evolution of the pandemic in the various countries,” he added.

Paradiso said that MSC will continue to adapt the protocol in line with relevant requirements and guidance, to “provide the (UK guests with the) same seamless experience they are used to when cruising.”

“We understand how important this particular summer is to holidaymakers and we’re committed to providing guests with a range of fantastic activities in a healthy and safe environment. Guests can expect a variety of fun and engaging areas for children with play areas for a range of ages and world-class dining and round-the-clock entertainment offerings that provide multi-generational groups with a holiday option that suits this summer,” he said.

According to Paradiso, MSC Cruises is also working on a program of protected shore excursions for its guests to experience the destinations it will visit, but “of course, this is subject to prevailing circumstances and local guidance at the time of sailing.”

“We believe that this special offering will provide UK holidaymakers with a unique summer of cruising and be the ultimate destination for families and friends to reconnect and create new memories this summer. In the meantime, we continue to engage with the UK Government and all relevant authorities as we evaluate the ever-changing travel landscape and prepare for any potential roadblocks that could arise as we journey on the roadmap to recovery. Whilst we are excited for a summer of British cruising, we remain confident that we will soon be able to welcome UK guests back onboard further afield,” he said.

Further details regarding the sailings will be announced shortly, Paradiso said, highlighting the cruise line’s commitment to providing flexibility to guests.

MSC Magnifica take by Dave Jones

MSC Cruises has announced that it is working closely with the Greek Ministry of Tourism and other relevant authorities for the reopening of local tourist services in time to serve cruise passengers visiting Greece, starting with the upcoming Easter holiday period.

In related news, the Company also announced that it is cancelling all of MSC Magnifica’s scheduled cruises through to April 29. MSC Magnifica will thus be replaced for voyages to the Eastern Mediterranean, including Greece, during the Easter period and throughout the summer season.

Guests booked on MSC Magnifica through to April 29 will be offered the option to rebook their MSC Cruises holiday at sea on one of the line’s other ships due to call Greece or on its flagship MSC Grandiosa, which is currently at sea in the Western Mediterranean. Alternatively, guests will receive 125% Future Cruise Credit, valid for all sailings taking place on or before April 30, 2022.

MSC Grandiosa is currently operating weekly cruises leaving every Sunday from Genoa, Italy and calling Civitavecchia, Naples, Palermo/Cagliari in Italy as well as Valetta in Malta. Embarkation is available from each port in Italy.

Summer 2021 ex-UK sailings are included in a new all-inclusive promotion launched by MSC Cruises.

The early booking promotion sees a premium drinks package included as part of the price on more than 1,000 departures between April and November 2021 from multiple embarkation ports across the world.

The initiative, which covers bookings made until December 2, includes all 22 MSC Magnifica sailings from Southampton on the ship’s second full ex-UK season as well as the Caribbean and Mediterranean fly-cruises.

UK and Ireland managing director Antonio Paradiso said: “After receiving feedback from our agents, as well as loyal customers, and taking into consideration the market landscape we’ve decided now is the right time to launch our latest promotion.

“We are seeing a definite appetite for booking holidays for 2021, however the feedback from the market has been that it has to be the right product at the right price.

“Our all-inclusive promotion is always incredibly popular, however now more than ever it’s important for guests to know that everything is taken care of.

“The all-inclusive price includes service charge and a premium drinks package so there really is nothing additional guests need to worry about.

“We understand the need from consumers to have a product that is great value, easy to understand and flexible which is why we think this promotion, combined with our stress-free cruising programme allowing flexible booking terms is the right promotion to stimulate bookings.”

He added: “We think this promotion provides a great opportunity for agents who we know are receiving enquiries from guests interested in a cruise to convert that initial interest into bookings, and ultimately to get their customers a great deal.”

Sailings from Southampton lead-in at £319 per person for a two-night mini-cruise.

A seven-night cruise on one of the flagship MSC Grandiosa starts at  £644pp.

Cruise lines “slash” prices for February

Cruise lines “slash” prices for February

Cruise lines “slash” prices for February
Cruise lines are slashing prices in a bid to boost sales after what is understood to have been a disappointing January.
A series of agents and third parties including cruise.co.uk, Cruise 1st and Travelzoo have gone out today with e-alerts claiming prices have been “slashed”.
Operators had hoped to increase prices this year during the key early year wave booking period but Travel Weekly understands business has been slower than hoped.
While Travelzoo is advertising savings on a range of cruises worldwide, the more aggressive discounts and added-value deals are available on ex-UK Southampton sailings.
Cruise.co.uk sent an alert to its database today entitled “Southampton prices slashed”, indicating the lines had given up trying to drive higher prices.
Cruise 1st’s press release claims to have “slashed” Royal Caribbean prices sailing from the UK, with prices from £599 for seven nights in a balcony cabin, plus onboard spend.
The Travelzoo ‘newsflash’ is headlined: “Cruise Prices Slashed for Wave Season, Save up to 54%”.
Seamus Conlon, cruise.co.uk managing director, said: "The cruise lines have introduced new cheaper prices with restrictive conditions in order to boost sales."
Carnival UK sales director Giles Hawke denied the move was a reaction to poor sales in January. "As we often do, we have a small amount of residual stock left on some early season cruises.
“For 2013 so far, we're happy with our rate of sale and our yield. The prices we're now putting into the market are not significantly different to what we had in the market last year.
“The new cheaper prices carry different terms and conditions so consumers can chose to have flexibility at the higher fare or pay in full with lower flexibility for the lower fare."
Carnival’s P&O Cruises and Cunard brands introduced a new pricing structure this year in which early booking Vantage Fares were meant to offer the best value and late Getaway Fares, while possibly cheaper, offered less flexibility.
Most of the major lines have cut commission to travel agents in the last year, Carnival the most aggressively to just 5%, from up to 15%.
Today Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises, which are paying 10%, unveiled “double incentives for agents and enticing new offers for customers”.
Royal Caribbean’s ‘Going, Going, Gone’ campaign is offering 3,000 14-night cruises at £999 per person, and 1,000 six to eight night cruises at £599 per person, from Southampton.
A Royal Caribbean announcement said agents will receive a £20 Lifestyle voucher for every 2013 booking made in February on cruises sailing from Southampton.
In addition, for any cruise booking made before February 28, agents will be entered into a daily prize draw to win one of five £100 Love to Shop vouchers.
Celebrity Cruises’ ‘123 Go!’ campaign allows customers to choose from one of three offers - free drinks worth up to $1400 per stateroom, free coach transfer or car parking in Southampton or $300 to spend onboard.
The offer is valid on all 2013 Celebrity Eclipse sailings departing from Southampton, in all stateroom categories, and also ends on February 28.
Agents will also receive a £20 Lifestyle voucher for every 2013 booking they make on Celebrity Eclipse sailings departing from the UK and sold in February.
In addition the Great Apple Giveaway has been extended until the end of February. Agents can win weekly giveaways of iPhone 5s and iPad minis, plus a grand prize of a stylish MacBook Air.
